Man Killed After SUV Crashes into Pond

Police said an 89-year-old man died after he drove his SUV into a retention pond in the 1500 block of N. Courtland Drive.

The preliminary investigation, according to police, showed that the vehicle driven by Henry E. Laseke left the private driveway at 1538 N. Courtland Drive and hit several objects, including a support pole below a second floor balcony and an electrical unit outside, according to witnesses at the scene.

The vehicle was located between 80 and 100 feet into the pond by emergency responders, the release said.

When emergency responders arrived, the vehicle was completely submerged in the pond, and Laseke was extricated by fire personnel then transported to Northwest Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:53 a.m., the release stated.

A Libertyville man who was arrested after telling police that he had planted bombs at Vernon Hills' Summer Celebration later admitted there were no explosives. Instead, he told police, he was simply angry that a woman he met at the event didn't like him.

James N. Trelford, 48, Libertyville, called Vernon Hills police at 11:08 p.m. July 20 to report he had planted three bombs on the Summer Celebration grounds at Century Park. He said the bombs would detonate in 15 minutes, police said.

Police determined the cell phone was registered to Trelford and they traced the cell phone call to the area of Lakeview Parkway and the EJ&E railroad tracks. The area is about one-half mile north of the Summer Celebration site.

At 11:20 p.m. a Vernon Hills police officer located Trelford walking from the trail north of the tracks into the Lowe's parking lot on Milwaukee Avenue north of the EJ&E tracks.
