High School Juniors Invited to Apply for Positions on City Commissions

The City of Highland Park and area high schools are working together to provide real government experiences for local students by having student members serve on City boards, task forces and commissions. High school juniors who are also Highland Park residents are eligible to apply. The students’ terms will commence in January of 2013 and end upon high school graduation.

“This is the second year of the program and we are delighted to offer students the opportunity to be a part of democracy in action. We feel strongly about supporting the education of tomorrow’s leaders by providing an opportunity for high school juniors to serve on a City board, task force or commission,” said Mayor Nancy Rotering.

While student members do not vote, they have the opportunity to participate in policy creation meetings, adding their perspectives and learning from City staff and commissioners.

“The juniors appointed last year will now serve as senior mentors to the incoming student commissioners, with an opportunity to learn about the continuity of policy agendas and leadership,” continued Rotering.

Applications are due no later than 5 p.m. Friday, December 7, 2012. To learn more about the City’s boards, task forces and commissions to which high school juniors may apply, click here. Students are urged to carefully review the application before applying, noting the time commitment involved and requirements as a commission member if selected.
