INSTALLATION OF SAFETY FENCE ALONG UNION PACIFIC RAIL IN DOWNTOWN HIGHWOOD TO BEGIN SEPTEMBER 12, 2012

HIGHWOOD, IL (SEPTEMBER 12, 2012) – The City of Highwood, in conjunction with the Union Pacific Railroad, is proud to announce the installation of safety fencing on three sections near the Highwood train station. The fencing will minimize non-commuter use of the pedestrian crossing at the Highwood Metra Station and is intended to eliminate casual use of the pedestrian crossing and divert pedestrians in the area to the public roadway crossings (e.g. Highwood Avenue).

“This project is a great example of a public/private partnership working to enhance safety in a community,” said Adrian Guerrero, Union Pacific director - Public Affairs for Illinois.

One portion of the fence will run along Green Bay Road from Highwood Avenue to North Avenue covering a length of approximately 403’. Another portion will run alongside the east side of the passenger platform that will restrict pedestrian crossings from the Highwood Train Station Lot to Green Bay Road. The final portion of the fence will run along Green Bay Road from Highwood Avenue to Highwood City Hall.

State Senator Susan Garrett also became involved in this project as an intermediary and facilitated discussions. “This fence ensures there is a barrier to prevent unnecessary accidents,” says Garrett. “This is not a construction fence, rather a permanent barrier that’s protective and aesthetically pleasing.”

“The safety of our citizens and visitors to Highwood is paramount,” says Highwood Mayor Charlie Pecaro. “With our weekly summer markets and seasonal events, Highwood is a main family destination in the North Shore. Safety is always our top concern.”

The City of Highwood would like to thank Union Pacific for its commitment and cooperation to this project.
