Kirk, Schneider Urge Caution in Syria

When it comes to the Syrian Civil War, Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) and Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) agree the complexity of the situation requires caution on the part of the United States government.

Both North Shore lawmakers oppose the use of American ground forces in Syria and feel both coalition building and working with other countries is the best way to protect United States interests in the region.

“The administration must do more to end Russian support to (Syrian President Bashar) Assad and close off Syrian supply routes from Iran,” a spokesperson for Kirk said.

Schneider, a member of the House Foreign Relations Committeewho witnessed a battle break out between opposing forces in Syria from an Israeli mountaintop last month, wants the United States to work with partners in the area to help determine the country’s best course.

“We must (work with) our allies in the region to design a strategy in Syria,” Schneider said. He wants not only Israel, Turkey and Jordan included but also Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf countries.

When it comes to arming the rebels fighting the Assad regime, Schneider also wants to make sure aid is not going to groups which might eventually want to harm the United State. “We cannot put weapons into the hands of rebels aligned with Al Qaeda,” he said.

Kirk also expressed some concern over the ability of the Assad forces and suggested caution before considering action. “U.S. officials should proceed with great caution due to the complexity of Syria’s air defense network,” his spokesperson said.
