New Cleaner Brings One Price, Green Technology

CD One Price Cleaners will open in August with one price ($2.79) for all dry cleaned items.

When Deerfield’s Board of Trustees approved a report of the Plan Commission Monday to grant a special use permit to CD One Price Cleaners, Village officials were excited about the environmentally friendly technology.

Residents may be just as excited paying one amount for all items dry cleaned ($2.79) and another fixed price for clothing laundered ($1.49), according to CD Chief Operating Officer Mike Corrao.

“We do apparel only,” Corrao said. “We do not do household items like comforters. The main reason we are able to keep our price low is we do a tremendous volume. Our average store does more than $1 million a year.” There are 33 stores in the Chicago area. It plans to open at 190 Waukegan Road in Deerfield in August.

Corrao focuses on speed as well. “If it’s in before 10 a.m. it will be ready by 5 p.m. that evening and we’ll send you an email when it’s ready,” he said.

The price was not discussed during the Board meeting and the one price concept barely mentioned. It was green technology like environmentally friendly solvents and the containment of vapors that was.

“We don’t want to subject our current cleaners to this (environmentally friendly techniques) because they have a lot of investment,” Mayor Harriet Rosenthal said. “We may want to make it a requirement for new owners.”

CD One Price Cleaners is able to recycle most of its solvents, which is made from petroleum, rather than perchloroethylene, according to Corrao. He also said the company makes an effort to train its employees in the best practices outlined by the Environmental Protection Agency at both the federal and state level.

“You can have all the best material and policy but you have to train your people,” Corrao said. “We train our people correctly on environmental (practices).” The effort is ongoing. The company also recycles its hangers. “Our customers do a wonderful job of bringing them back.”
