Proposed recreational enhancements include a new playground on the beach, an improved ravine trail, sand volleyball, and new picnic areas. The beachfront will meet all ADA requirements including equal access to the beach and buildings.

In addition, the US Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) has conducted a feasibility study on improvements to the lakeshore. The main goal of their project is to stabilize the bluff, the ravine and dunes, and to reduce erosion and sedimentation into Lake Michigan. The USACE plan creates naturalistic wave breaks to protect shoreline vegetation and restore nearshore fish habitat. Additional sand will be added resulting in an extended and fully nourished beach.

Combined, the proposed plans balance both the environmental and recreational needs of the community.

“Everyone who lives next to this Great Lake Michigan has a stake in its conservation and renovation,” states Park Commissioner Elaine Waxman. “We encourage residents to attend one of the public meetings to preview this exciting proposed beach development plan and share your thoughts.”
