Should Highland Park Kids be Required to Wear a Bike Helmet?

Highland Park Police say they don't have the resources to enforce the city's current bike helmet regulation and want to make it a parental matter. Is this a good idea?

The City of Highland Park is debating whether to change its bicycle regulation requiring children age 15 and younger to wear a safety helmet to a recommendation, reported the Highland Park News.

The Highland Park Police Department's view is that it simply doesn't have the resources to enforce the current requirement, and that it is the parents' responsibility to ensure their child is safe while riding a bicycle, according to the story.

City council members could not reach a decision at its last meeting but will have another discussion on Aug. 12.

Do you think it's a good idea to change the bike helmet requirement to a recommendation? Share your opinion in the comments.
