How Do I Start Getting Organized?

So you want to get organized and don't know where to begin? Here are a few tips to get you started!

It has been nearly one year since I exercised regularly.  I took a dance class that I loved and walked three times a week.  But life happened and since then I have been waiting for the right type of exercise routine to "speak to me", for the right routine to fit into my already full schedule, for it to fit into my already tight budget, a morning class to fit into my "energy peak", something that doesn't require itchy tights, too much sweat, something that excites, motivates...maybe New Year's Day, maybe the first day of Spring, maybe... I've been waiting for the perfect event to happen in the perfect time.  Which is exactly why it has been nearly a year. What I need is someone to say to me, o.k. this is what you do to get started.  Put aside the story behind why you haven't started and begin with one simple step.  Don't wait for the perfect time to start, that will never happen.  Just do something.  Just Do It! SO YOU WANT TO GET ORGANIZED?! AND YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN? Well, THAT I can help you with.  I can be that someone that gets you started.  So here are a few tips to help with overwhelm and indecision:

1. When is a good time to start? Today.

2. Where do I begin? Choose a corner of the room or space you need organized and do a sweep from one end to the other.

3. What about those drawers and boxes? Leave those to last.  Only do what's visible first; counter tops, desk tops, open shelves.  This way you'll see results quicker which will keep you motivated.

4. How long should I keep going? Choose anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours, it doesn't matter.  What matters is that you DO SOMETHING and that you stop when the time is allotted is over.  No matter how much or how little.

5. What if I get "stuck" on an item? Put it in a "I don't know yet" pile and revisit at the end of your organizing session.  Don't let yourself get bogged down with indecision.  Do the "no brainers" first; items that are broken, not yours, outdated and plain useless or ugly.

6. Oh, and avoid zigzag organizing!  Put a laundry basket outside the room and place things that belong to other spaces in your home.  At the end of the organizing session, then put them away.

The truth is, none of my tips really, truly matter.  What matters is that you start.  Take that first step, no matter how small, and believe it or not, the rest will come. Organizing is easy for me.  It always has been.  Exercising...well that's another story.  I would welcome any tips from YOU to help me take the first steps and if you need any more support from me, well, you know where to find me.
