The information below comes from District 113.

Scott Beck Named to Chicago Tribune All-State Academic Team

Highland Park High School senior Scott Beck was recently named to the Chicago Tribune AllState Academic Team. Only ten high school students in Illinois were selected.

According to the Tribune’s website, “The annual Chicago Tribune All-State Academic Team celebrates wunderkinds in Illinois high schools whose talents transcend even their brainiest peers.”

Scott, a National Merit Scholar, has a 4.69 GPA on a 4.0 scale. He was selected French horn first chair in the North Shore Honor Band. He played on the HPHS soccer team for the past four years. Scott also scored a perfect 36 on the ACT – and those are just some of his many accomplishments.

Scott will receive a $2,000 college scholarship from the Chicago Tribune Foundation, which supports civic, educational, cultural and journalistic efforts.

Those who competed for the 28th annual All-State Academic scholarships were nominated by their principals. The judges — educators and others involved in education issues or organizations — ranked each application on the basis of activities showing achievement and leadership, grades, test scores and a creative essay. For the essay, students were asked to imagine going back in time to try and prevent someone from inventing or producing something they believe to be harmful or just plain annoying. What would they say to this person to make the case? The judges chose 70 finalists from seven regions in Illinois. From those, 10 winners were selected in May.

HPHS Students Earn Recognition at International DECA Conference

Highland Park High School DECA chapter members earned the organization’s highest honors at DECA’s 67th annual International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, Calif. in April.

Students receiving recognition at the international level included: Natasha Galperin, Simone Gerber, Yael Reichler, Daniel Lishanskiy, Jake Weiskirch, Rachel Glikin, Alexa Soren, Daniel Nussbaum, Riley Mort, and Zoe Moss.

During the school year, approximately 120,000 of DECA’s 200,000 student members take part in the organization’s competitive events program, allowing them to compete for local and regional titles. The competitions are designed to simulate real-life business scenarios and test students’ academic understanding and skills development.

The top state and provincial winners put their talents to the test during the program’s final round of competition in Anaheim.

The DECA International Career Development Conference was the pinnacle of competition where nearly 10,000 students vied for international honors. Nearly $500,000 in scholarships and awards were presented to students and teachers for their achievements.

DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. DECA enhances the preparation for college and careers by providing co-curricular programs that integrate into classroom instruction, apply learning, connect to business and promote competition.
