D113's Fornero to Retire at End of Next School Year

That's two years before the embattled superintendent's contract was to expire.

The District 113 school board voted Monday to approve an early retirement package for Superintendent George Fornero, who has been the subject of withering criticism from parents, particularly in the wake of the departure of the popular Highland Park High School principal this spring, according to an article in the Highland Park News.

The agreement means Fornero will leave at the end of the coming school year, the article says, instead of when his contract ends in June 2017.

When Highland Park Principal Brad Swanson announced his decision to leave the district this spring, he was greeted with a chorus of sadness and outrage, with many parents and students saying Fornero forced him out.

Fornero said he made the decision to retire early because he’ll be turning 60, the News article says, which makes him eligible for full retirement benefits, and so he can care for his mother, who is in declining health.
