District 112 Projects Tax Reduction

Decrease of debt will mean Highland Park taxpayers will shell out less for elementary and middle schools. District will hold public hearing on levy Tuesday and discuss withdrawal from North Shore Special Education District.

A reduction of long term obligations by North Shore School District 112 will mean Highland Park and Highwood taxpayers will see a smaller amount from the District on their real estate tax bill next year.

Though Chief Financial Officer Moshin Dada recommends a $66,291,472 tax levy for the coming year, the District’s retirement of $1.8 million in long term bonds last year will result in a tax cut, according to Communications Director Andi Rosen.

With a levy for the current year at $65,754,089, there is still a 1.8 percent bump in the levy but when debt payments are figured in, the amount due from taxpayers comes down. A person living in a home valued at $500,000 can expect to pay $53 less for the District’s portion of real estate taxes next year, according to Rosen.

There will be a public hearing on the 2013 levy on taxes due in 2014 at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the District offices on Green Bay Road. Also on the agenda is a vote on whether the District should withdraw from the North Shore Special Education District.

Though readers on Patch’s Facebook page are expressing dissatisfaction with this potential move, the District has developed resources to handle many of the needs internally, according to Rosen. Those needing services the District cannot provide will still get them.
