Highland Park High School Debate Team Sweeps Tournament

The Highland Park High School Debate Team had their best tournament at the Illinois Congressional Debate Association State tournament.

The Highland Park High School Debate Team had their best tournament ever when they swept the Illinois Congressional Debate Association State tournament, placing 1st in both the Championship Division and the Invitational Division. The tournament was held at Harper Community College and the top 14 debaters competed with the best from 25 schools.

The team also brought home many individual trophies. Representing the Championship Division, Eli Ruffer, Alexa Soren, and Alex Foster won the Critic's Choice award. Matt Kaufmann placed 2nd and Eli Ruffer was Best Presiding Officer.  

In the Invitational Division, Alex Froy and Cari Kraus won Critic's Choice. Cameron Deahl, Claire Rafson, and Alex Gordon placed 1st. Claire Rafson and Cari Kraus were voted Best Presiding Officer.

The HPHS Debate Team has only won the ICDA tournament once in over 30 years when the 2004 team placed 1st in the Championship Division.

This is the first sweep for Highland Park.
