Highland Park High School Students Named Finalists in Tollway Map Competition

Highland Park High School students Abby Friedman and Andrew Kaufmann have been selected finalists in the  2013 Tollway Map Cover Art Contest. 

High school students were invited to submit original works of art based on this year’s contest theme, “Remembering Our Veterans.” The winning design will be featured on the cover of the 2013 Illinois Tollway map.

The Tollway received 57 entries from 26 schools throughout the region. Abby Friedman and Andrew Kaufmann are now two of four finalists. The grand prize winner will be announced on November 15 at Illinois Tollway headquarters in Downers Grove. You can view their designs on the HPHS website. 

Jonny Cohen & GreenShields Competes for $100,000 Grant

GreenShields has been selected by the American Business Council Continuity Forum as one of 35 finalists to compete for three $100,000 grants. GreenShields was founded by current HPHS student Jonny Cohen, who is significantly younger than the other finalists. 

The GreenShield is an aerodynamic add-on that attaches to the roof of school buses. It reduces drag force, thereby improving gas mileage. The goal is simple: equip as many school buses with the GreenShield as possible, at little or no cost to the schools.

The Americas Business Council Foundation is a think-do tank that supports high-impact leaders and initiatives in the Americas. Three initiatives out of the 35 will be selected to receive funding and hands-on advisory, media and marketing support for two years with the objective of reaching jointly identified quantifiable objectives.

Nominate a Teacher for Golden Apple

Know a K-5 teacher who deserves special recognition? The Highland Park Community Foundation invites you to nominate him or her for a Golden Apple Award. Any full-time classroom teacher who spends the majority of his/her time teaching grades Kindergarten through fifth grade in North Shore School District 112 may be nominated. Nomination forms are available on the District 112 website are due by December 31. 

In addition to being honored by his/her school and the district, the winner will receive a $2000 cash prize, an iPad, and an opportunity to share his/her expertise with colleagues and contribute to the improvement of teaching in his/her school.
