HPHS Assistant Principal Koulentes Named Interim Principal

He will serve as principal for the coming school year, replacing Brad Swanson, who resigned.

Highland Park High School has named Assistant Principal Tom Koulentes the interim principal for the coming school year, the school announced Thursday.

He has been HPHS assistant principal since 2005 and replaces outgoing principal Brad Swanson, who resigned to take a position with District 225 in Glenview-Northbrook.

Swanson’s departure was met with considerable backlash from parents and students, who believe he did not want to leave. Students protested his departure this spring.

In reaction to the community’s displeasure, the board decided to use an interim principal for a year while it searches for a permanent replacement, according to an article in the Highland Park News. The board will use an executive search firm to find a successor.

Koulentes is a Highland Park resident who joined the district in 1995 as a social studies and English language learners teacher at HPHS.
