With backgrounds including electrical engineering, biology and chemistry, the speakers said getting an internship is key to finding a good job. They also recommended that students find a way to get involved in scientific research during their high school years.

Another recommendation: "Get as much math and science as you can!" The speakers noted that graduates from science and engineering programs are also suited for a number of career paths, not necessarily just the highly technical. "Scientists and engineers can also be CEOs. They can go into marketing," one speaker noted.

The acronym STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math, and the W stands for women, as women are being encouraged to pursue new career fields that were once hard to achieve. One Avon professional, who referred to herself as the "oldest" in the bunch, said she encountered some resistance in her early years and that determination propelled her through.

Organizers were pleased to have an audience filled with both female and male students interested in the presentation. This is the club’s inaugural year.

HPHS CHESS TEAM PLAYS WELL AT EVANSTON TOURNAMENT

Congratulations to members of the HPHS chess team who performed well at the Evanston Chess Tournament. The team faced some of the best competition in the state, including Whitney Young, who placed 1st in state last year, and North Side College Prep, who placed 8th in state last year. “Coming home with a 2-2 record was phenomenal,” said Pablo Alvarez, the team’s sponsor.

CITY OF HIGHLAND PARK SEEKS STUDENT COMMISSIONERS

The City of Highland Park has worked together with local high schools in the past to invite high school students to expand real governmental experience by having student members on Commissions. This has been a great opportunity for the students to learn about local government and see democracy in action; additionally, it has proven to be a great asset to the City.

Student commissioners begin their term in January of junior year until graduation.  Each student is able to serve on the Commission or Task Force he/she is interested

in and will act as an ex-officio member of the commission without a vote, but meet the same expectations as other members on the respective commission, task force or board.

A list of the City’s boards, commissions and task forces can be found at: www.cityhpil.com/boardsandcommissions. The link to the online application for student commissioners is www.cityhpil.com/studentcommission. The deadline for online applications this year is December 6, 2013.
