Shell Casing Found at McHenry Co. Elementary School Monday

A search of the school turned up nothing suspicious and an investigation is ongoing.

A McHenry County elementary school was among many schools throughout the country that police responded to Monday for potentially suspicious incidents on the first day back to school following the tragic shooting in Newtown, Conn. 

Harvard Police responded to Crosby Elementary School at 7:45 a.m. after a .22-caliber shell casing was found on the cafeteria floor, according to the Northwest Herald. Students "were kept in their classrooms doing school work for about three hours" as a search was conducted at the school, according to the Chicago Tribune. 

The school day later resumed after nothing suspicious was found. An investigtion is ongoing, according to the Northwest Herald. There are about 850 students that attend Crosby Elementary School, which serves children in grades kindergarten through third grade, according to the school's website. 

"We will be taking precautionary walk-throughs of all district schools today," said Lauri Tobias, superintendent of District 50, in a message to parents posted on District 50's website. "We have also had an increased police presence in order to calm students and staff."

On Monday, parents nationwide expressed concern over sending their kids back to school following a tragic shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. Friday. School districts stepped up security and reviewed safety plans in thew ake of the tragedy. 

Across the nation, suspicious incidents at schools were reported Monday and required police attention. In Ridgefield, Conn., a lockdown was ordered at its schools after a man who appeared to be holding a rifle was reported at a local train station, according to the Huffington Post. 

In Los Angeles, Kyle Bangayan, 24, of Pomona was arrested for accusations that he made threats against elementary schools on Facebook, according to the Huffington Post. Police also seized several guns from Bangayan.

When I was a kid in the 90's we used to go to the quarry across the street and collect all the spent gun shells and bring them to school to show our friends. No one freaked out.
