LUNGevity and Shri Yoga Host Breathe Deep Chicago Yogathon to Support Lung Cancer Research

BREATHE DEEP CHICAGO YOGATHON RAISES FUNDS
FOR NATION’S NUMBER-ONE CANCER KILLER

Highland Park, IL February 19, 2014– On March 2, 2014, LUNGevity Foundation, the nation’s largest organization dedicated to research for the early detection and treatment of lung cancer, will host Breathe Deep Chicago Yogathon, a full day of yoga, community and fundraising, at Shri Yoga Center in downtown Highland Park.

Registration for the event costs $35 in advance and $40 at the door; all participants will receive a t-shirt. To register or make a donation, please visit www.lungevity.org/yogathon or call 312-407-6100. Proceeds from the event will benefit LUNGevity and will fund research to achieve its goal to increase and improve survivorship of lung cancer.

Although lung cancer is the number-one cancer killer–the disease kills more people than colorectal, breast, and pancreatic, combined–it receives less than 6% of federal research funding. As a result, the five-year survival rate is only 17%, versus 89% for breast cancer, 65% for colorectal cancer, and 99% for prostate cancer. The donated funds from Breathe Deep Chicago Yogathon will support the most promising research into early detection and more effective treatments.

Breathe Deep Chicago Yogathon is a second year event.  Vicki Browdy, the Yogathon Event Coordinator, is a lung cancer advocate. She is creating an event for people like herself, who have been affected by lung cancer, to come together on their mats and raise funds for research. Yogathon will include classes beginning at 9:30am with a gong finale at 5:00pm.

LUNGevity’s goal is to save the lives of more than 224,000 Americans newly diagnosed with lung cancer each year.  Breathe Deep Chicago Yogathon is one of more than 80 events around the country to benefit LUNGevity and raise awareness of the prominence of lung cancer and the need for increased research funding.
