Celebrate Independence Day in Highland Park

City's 4th of July schedule includes live music, a parade and pets.

As the Nation’s 236th birthday approaches, the City of Highland Park has announced the schedule of events for the Fourth of July, with all events occurring on Wednesday, July 4.

The theme for this year’s festivities is “A Look Back in Time.”

The Independence Day celebration begins at 9:30 a.m. with the Chamber of Commerce’s Children’s Bike and Pet Parade. Individuals interested in participating should meet at 9:15 a.m. in the lower level of the parking structure at the northwest corner of St. Johns and Laurel Avenues.

At 10 a.m., immediately following the Children’s Bike and Pet Parade, the annual Independence Day Parade will begin at the intersection of Laurel and St. Johns Avenue. The parade features floats, marching bands, dignitaries, novelty groups, community entries, andother special events. The parade will head north on St. Johns Avenue, then turn west on Central Avenue and continue to Sunset Park.

Following the parade, the Park District’s annual  will occur at from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fourth Fest will feature a variety of food vendors and musical performers to entertain residents. Additional entertainment will include carnival rides, a petting zoo, pony rides, picnic games, live music, and concession stands.

Beginning at 6 p.m., the seventh annual  concert will be held at Wolters Field. The concert will include the grand finale of the 2012 Battle of the Bands, with winners from previous rounds competing to be named the 2012 champion.

As the concert ends and dusk falls, the evening concludes with a fireworks display that can be viewed from Wolters Field. Due to construction, parking will not be available at Wolters Field. Event‐goers are encouraged to consider parking at the east parking lot, the Highland Park Country Club or the Staples parking lot.
