'Sababa!' musical group to perform at Temple Jeremiah

On a Sunday afternoon in February in the middle of winter, the Chicago area is about to get even “cooler.”

The musical group Sababa! – named for a Hebrew word that means “cool” in Israeli vernacular – will be performing at Temple Jeremiah, 937 Happ Road in Northfield, on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 3 p.m. The concert is free and open to community members of all ages. The performance will feature children’s choirs from synagogues around the North Shore: Temple Jeremiah (Northfield), Congregation Beth Shalom (Northbrook), Beth Tikvah (Hoffman Estates), Oak Park Temple (Oak Park), Beth Hillel Congregation Bnai Emunah (Wilmette), and B'nai Jehoshua Beth Elohim (Deerfield).

Sababa! is an energetic, spirited group comprised of Steve Brodsky, Robbi Sherwin, and Scott Leader from Denver, Austin, and Phoenix, respectively. All three are successful and well-loved Jewish recording artists on their own; and they say that together, their spirited Jewish songcrafting has them being touted as a Jewish “Crosby, Stills & Nash” or Jewish “Supergroup.”

“We’re a bit uncomfortable with that moniker," says Sherwin, the only female in the band. “We are just three great friends who love to make music together.”

Cantor Amy Zussman, Temple Jeremiah’s musical leader, said she loves to bring talented musicians to the synagogue for her congregants to enjoy.

“Sababa! is a group that brings upbeat, original Jewish music,” she said. “I’m delighted that our junior choir will be joining the performers on stage, along with the junior choir members from five other synagogues. It’s a very cool thing for these kids to sing with a professional group and to get to know the other kids who sing in junior choirs in the Chicago area.”
