Live Jazz & Bidding Gala Event Features Rwandan Grad Saturday

Rwandan Grad Speaks at Gala Event

A Rwandan school graduate and Northwestern University student, Joris Cyizere, will speak at Brick by Brick, a silent auction benefitting Sonrise School, Musanze, Rwanda, to be held Saturday, Oct. 20 at Church of the Redeemer, 1731 Deerfield Road, Highland Park.

Cyizere will deliver the program about Sonrise schools—the secondary school, as well as the primary boarding school, twice named the best Rwandan school based on national testing. Funding raised will contribute to the general operating budgets of both schools.

Open to the public, refreshments, desserts and coffee, and live jazz music will be provided. Tickets are $5 in advance and $10 at the door.

Items to be auctioned include: a one-hour introductory flying lesson, weeklong accommodations at a Smoky Mountains cabin, Chicago Shakespeare tickets, an estate planning gift certificate, a Rwandan nativity made of olive wood, hand-knit baby hats, and more.

The unitary state’s top boarding schools provide education, healthcare, meals, and guidance to some 1,100 students. As one of the school's leading founders, Church of the Redeemer has been supporting Sonrise for 13 years, meeting humanitarian needs following the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Eighty students are scheduled to graduate in 2012.
