Take A Stand will hold an Awareness Event on June 23, at Paulus Park in Lake Zurich, starting at 10 a.m.
and other substances; they hope knowledge will end the cycle of deaths.
The event will include five speakers: Mike Mahoney, a recovering addict; Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran; Chris Migulski, a substance abuse professional; Sayra Stom, a member of the Jeremy Stom Remembrance Foundation(Stom, a Hawthorn Woods resident and Stevenson High School graduate, died in April 2009, a week before his 19thbirthday, after losing a battle with drug addiction); and Tom Habley, a teacher at Stevenson High School who knew Jeremy Stom.
At about 11:00 a.m., there will be a 5K walk around the lake. People are encouraged to bring their voices and make signs (appropriate of course), according to organizers.
After the walk, there will be a balloon release in memory of those lost through addiction. After the balloon release, the event will continue with hot dogs, burgers, refreshments, face painting, and supportive organizations will have booths for any community members with questions. There will also be opportunities to donate.
This walk is free of charge; organizers want the entire community to join us in the fight to create a mass awareness of heroin and other controlled substances.
