Bannockburn Dominick’s: One of Last Standing

North Shore customers can continue to shop until Jan. 25.

There are very few Dominick’s stores remaining in Chicagoland and one is in our back yard.

Nearly all Chicago area Dominick’s closed at noon Saturday but the one at Bannockburn Green by the intersection of Waukegan and Half Day Roads was an exception. It will remain open through Jan. 25 selling merchandise at regular prices.

Customers were shopping Sunday as they always have. “It’s the first place we shopped when we moved to Riverwoods 20 years ago,” Peter and Diane Beightley said.

For others, like Kim Steveson of Lake Forest, she will miss it but knows she has other options. “Dominick’s loss is Sunset’s gain,” she said.

A spokesperson for Safeway, Dominick’s parent company, said the location is staying open because of lease obligations, according to a report in the Chicago Tribune. It is the only one doing so in the Chicago metropolitan area, according to Channel 7 News.

Despite what other news agencies have reported, the Buffalo Grove store on Half Day Road told Patch today it would also be open through Jan. 25.

Dominick DiMatteo opened his first store in Chicago in 1918, nine years after arriving in the United States from Italy, according to the company website. The 96-year tradition ends Jan. 25 in Bannockburn, far from the first location at 3832 West Ohio Street.

Listen to the Beightleys, Steveson and others talk about shopping at the last Dominick’s open in the Chicago area.
