District 113 Boasts Higher Test Scores Than State, Nation

Deerfield and Highland Park High School students test higher than state and national averages.

Highland Park and Deerfield High School students are averaging higher scores on state tests than students throughout Illinois, according to a report recently released by the Illinois State Board of Education. As Patch reported earlier this year, Deerfield High School has the highest composite score on the ACT in Lake County for the second year in a row with a score of 27.1 out of 36. Highland Park High School's score is 26. Those figures are well above state and national averages, 20.9 and 21.1 respectively. "Though the unprecedented number of brilliant students created a very competitive atmosphere for my peers and I---and always set test curves way too high---I'm honored to have graduated in such an overachieving class," said former …

DHS Class Boasts Highest ACT Scores in History

Recent District 113 grads test significantly higher than state and national averages.

The recent graduating class of 2011 has made high school history, as those students posted the highest average ACT score Township High School District 113 has ever seen.  “We are proud of these results but not surprised,” Superintendent George Fornero said in response to Illinois’ numbers released this week. “Our students are committed to academic study and our teachers and staff support them every step of the way.”     According to school officials, the class of 2011’s scores matched or outperformed previous district scores in every category tested including English, math, reading and science. The ACT is a college entrance exam, which is a standardized test scored on a 1-36 scale.  Related: DHS Student Rocks ACT, Gets Perfect Score.  The …

What a great event for high school students. I know that my scores got better each time I took the exam. Unfortunately, still not high enough to hang with the DHS kids. However, I was more of a SAT kind of girl. Do they even take those anymore?   more ›

Deerfield Student Rocks ACT, Gets Perfect Score

DHS junior opens up to Patch about her perfect 36.

To most people, 36 is just another number.  For Kerry Glass, a junior at Deerfield High School, 36 represents a dream come true. Glass recently found out she obtained a perfect score, a composite 36, on her ACT exam.  She checked her score online. “I started screaming,” Glass said. She said her dad called out to her to find out what was wrong. “It took a couple of seconds to register,” she said. A high achiever in both academics and athletics, Glass said she was actually hoping for a 36. She has her sights set on universities that require high scores, including Notre Dame, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Northwestern University. “I needed to get a good score,” Glass said. Among test takers in the high school graduating class …

Special Report: Getting that Perfect College Fit

Deerfield High grad and local ACT tutor recap payout of selecting right school.

"I knew I wanted to go to Missouri because not many people were applying there," said Deerfield High School graduate William Beaudoin. The University of Missouri sophomore is studying to become a high school social studies teacher. Although he applied to one other out-of-state college, Beaudoin knew right off the bat Mizzou was right for him: "It just was a love at first site experience." Beaudoin should consider himself fortunate as other students aren't as lucky or realistic in their admission expectations. Considering the options  Jan Caron, an ACT tutor on the North Shore has been assisting local students with the college application process for years and is familiar with the desire of Deerfield parents to send their teen to a …

Special Report: Easing Through the ACT Exam

Test coach has tips for students taking Saturday's nail-biting college-entrance test.

On Saturday high school juniors in Deerfield and across the country will face a standardized test that many have come to fear. They will sit down armed with a No. 2 pencil for the annual ritual of taking the ACT, a college-entrance exam that has been around since the late 1950s. Students are quizzed on their English, math, reading and science skills. About 1.6 million, or 47 percent, of the U.S. high school students who graduated in 2010 took the test during the course of getting their diploma and applying for college, ACT Inc. reported. A good score can be pivotal to being accepted into their desired school. This is where local resident Jan Caron comes in. "If they get the score they're happy with, I won't see them again," said Caron, an…
