Highland Park beat Maine East, but fell in our latest power rankings.
Not a lot of change in our rankings as most of the top teams took care of business. Loyola Academy’s win over Mount Carmel was a good start to its tough run of in-conference games. Glenbrook South surprised some people with a win over New Trier while Deerfield continued to roll behind the strong play of Brad Holway. All the Central Suburban League teams play on Thursday this week with crucial games coming for Highland Park at Niles North and New Trier going on the road to Niles West. Last week’s ranking is in parentheses. WEEK 7 RANKINGS 1. Maine South (1) – Maine South took care of business against Niles West, getting its starters some work and some rest in a 55-15 victory. The Hawks did allow a kickoff return for a touchdown though, and…
Highland Park Giants notched their third victory Friday night over Maine East.
The Giants capped off another strong performance last Friday night with 21 unanswered points in the second half, beating the Maine East Blue Demons 35-21 and leveling their record to 3-3 overall. The Giants also earned their second conference win, moving them to 2-0, in a first place tie with Deerfield. The Blue Demons had one strategy on Friday night: control the clock. And that’s exactly what they did; their time of possession (TOP) was nearly three times that of the Giants. But, in the end, even clock control couldn’t stop Andrew Sledd and the Giant’s potent offense. The Blue Demons marched down the field on the opening drive, going 80 yards in 15 plays and 7:28, taking an early 7-0 lead. The Giants responded on their second drive of …

Highland Park rallied from an early deficit against Maine East for third straight win.
Quick Recap: It was "The Game of the Clock" for the Maine East Blue Demons on Friday night, as they held the ball for nearly three times as long as the Highland Park Giants. But, in the end, even time management wasn't enough against Highland Park's potent offense as the Giants poured on five touchdowns in just over 12 minutes of play winning 35-21. Digest: In their second conference game of the year, and looking to level their overall record to 3-3, the Giant’s game out flat to start the game. They let Maine East march down the field on their first possession for a touchdown, giving up a 15 play, 80-yard, 7:28 drive and putting the Giants in a 7-0 hole to start the game. The Giant’s struggled to get their offense going, and the defense …

The Giants pummeled the Warriors on Friday night with a 42-point win.
The Highland Park Giants came out with another strong performance last Friday night, celebrating their Homecoming with a 56-14 win over the Maine West Warriors and garnering their second victory of the season. Following up their tenacious performance against Niles West High School, the Giants started off aggressive and kept that momentum going all throughout the game. “[After starting 0-3], our goal was to keep improving, and that’s exactly what these kids are doing: improving everyday," said head coach Hal Chiodo after the game. The defense really shined for the Giants as they seemed to fly to the ball on every down, not quitting until the whistle blew. Maine West got the ball to start the game, and after two menial rushes, senior …

The Giants celebrated homecoming with a solid victory over the Warriors.
Recap: The Highland Park Giants took the momentum from their victory over Niles West last week and brought it with them to their homecoming performance on Friday night with a 56-14 victory over the Maine West Warriors. The Giants shredded the Warriors defense, racking up 47 of their 56 points in the first half. Junior running back Andrew Sledd had another impressive game with 94 yards on the ground, 40 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns. Sledd’s damage could have been much worse, as he did not have a single carry in the second half. Players of the Game: This week it has to go to the Giant’s defense. They got after the ball all night long and played with the same aggressiveness they played with against Niles West. They held Maine West to …

Highland Park shuts down Niles West's offense as it racks up 47 points on scoreboard.
The Highland Park Giants came out strong on last Friday night, taking down the Niles West Wolves 47-14 and garnering their first victory of the season. The Giants game plan was to stay after the ball, which was illustrated with attempting an onside kick to start the game. Though the play was called back because of an illegal formation, head coach Hal Chiodo felt the aggressiveness was the secret to his team's success. “The kids came out tonight and played with good, hard intensity,” Chiodo said after the game. After a fumble recovery by the Giants on the second play of the game, they continued their attack when senior quarterback Jason Goldstein launched a 37-yard pass downfield, putting them deep in Wolves territory. Junior running back …

A potent offense catapults Highland Park to its first victory of the season.
Recap: The Highland Park Giants came out firing on Friday, attacking the Niles West Wolves from the get go, drawing up onside kicks and play action passes that kept the Wolves on their heels all night. Andrew Sledd scored a total of 6 touchdowns, racking up 36 of the team’s 47 points. Star of the Game: This has to got to Andrew Sledd who tallied up six total touchdowns, including three rushing, one receiving and two kickoff returns. He combined for over 300 all-purpose yards, blasting out a big chunk of that on his 91 and 90-yard kick returns. Honorable Mention: Enough can’t be said about the Highland Park defense. After they struggled last week against the New Trier Trevians, the Giants defense came out and played far more aggressively…

Turnovers prove costly in 41-8 loss to Lake Forest.
A sustained drive to start the game looked like it was taking Highland Park’s football team everywhere Friday at Lake Forest, but key turnovers and timely defensive plays by the Scouts put the Giants in a hole they could not escape for a 41-8 loss. Football recap: Lake Forest 41, Highland Park 8 Not only did a 60-yard drive, consuming nearly half the first quarter, fail to produce any Highland Park points, an interception and lost fumble became almost immediate points for Lake Forest, putting the Giants in a 27-0 hole near the end of the first half. A change in quarterbacks and a switch to a passing strategy in the second half allowed the Giants to score, but not nearly enough to erase a 27-point first half Lake Forest advantage. After …
