The Chicagoland Jewish High School basketball team's deep post-season run brought the entire community together and made winners of the Tigers off the court as well as on.
The Chicagoland Jewish High School basketball team won’t win a state trophy this year after falling to Newark, 67-64, during Saturday’s Class 1A Mooseheart sectional championship game. But they won over the Jewish community, garnered the attention of their classmates and alumni and crafted wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. Chicagoland Jewish High School's rally falls short as Tigers drop Sectional title game Saturday night.
The Chicagoland Jewish High School basketball team proved this week that it can rally late to come out victorious in a win-or-go-home game. The Tigers found themselves in such a predicament again during Saturday’s Class 1A Mooseheart Sectional championship game against Newark, falling 67-64. If Chicagoland Jewish High School advances to the state semifinals, the Illinois High School Association will change the schedule so that the team can observe the Sabbath. Today's Sectional Title game is already moved to Saturday night.
The Chicagoland Jewish High School boys basketball is only two wins away from heading to the Class 1A state semifinals. If they make it, the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) has agreed to tweak the schedule so the team can observe the Sabbath. The IHSA made its first schedule change when it moved the Tigers' Sectional title game against Newark from 7:30 p.m. today to 7:30 p.m. tomorrow. Should they win the next two games, the state semifinal match, originally scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday in Peoria, will be rescheduled for Saturday evening. Chicagoland Jewish High School routs Ida Crown to advance to Sectional Tournament.
Feb. 21 The Final Score: Chicagoland Jewish High School 67, Ida Crown 38 Tigers’ Star Performer: Jake Newlander of Skokie scored 15 points. Other Notable Performances: Josh Newlander of Skokie and Avdan Halivni of Deerfield chipped in 13 tallies each. Feb. 5 The Final Score: Chicagoland Jewish High School 74, Vernon Hills 66 Tigers’ Star Performer: Josh Newlander of Skokie tossed in 30 points, grabbed four rebounds, dished out four assists and stole the ball twice. Other Notable Tiger Performances: Jake Newlander of Skokie added 19 tallies along with three rebounds, assists and steals. Four new teachers, a school rabbi and finance director join Chicagoland Jewish High School for new term.
Chicagoland Jewish High School welcomed six new staff members to its Deerfield campus when its new term began Monday including a school rabbi, a finance director and four teachers. Holding the title rav beit sefer—Hebrew for school rabbi—Rabbi Zachary Silver was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary in May after experiences as diverse as leading student on a trip to Uganda and working as a sports editor. Silver did his undergraduate work at the University of Pennsylvania where he was the sports editor of the school paper. He was also a group leader for a high school American Jewish World Service trip to Uganda devoted to engaging in issues of global responsibility, according to information provided by the school.
