How can the role of the prosecutor affect cases like Rousso, Lynn, Mahoney and Norris? Without mentioning specific cases, Mike Nerheim and Chris Kennedy explain what they could do.
Felony charges against Deerfield and Highland Park teenagers since early August has sparked intense discussion in those communities about what kind of consideration should be given to young people without past criminal history. A prosecutor’s discretion has some effect on how these cases could progress through the courts and ultimately what kind of punishment the accused offenders could receive. The only certainty is Lake County will have a new state’s attorney after the Nov. election. Earlier: Prosecutor Explains Why Norris, Mahoney Charged as Adults Long time Lake County State’s Attorney Mike Waller is not running for reelection. Lake County voters will choose either Democrat Chris Kennedy or Republican Mike Nerheim to replace Waller. …

Lake County State's Attorney candidates answer questions at forum.
The wrongful prosection case of Juan Rivera gained national attention following his release after 20 years in state prison. The case shined a light on Lake County prosecutors and police who resisted his release even after DNA evidence indicated the 11-year-old Waukegan girl was raped by another man. DNA evidence and its use has become a critical issue in the race for Lake County State's Attorney among six candidates, including two current assistant state's attorneys. One of those is Louise Hayes, a Lake Bluff resident who became an assistant state's attorney in 1990. She touts her experience in the office as the best and most compared to her opponents. Reginald Mathews has not been an assistant state's attorney for as long as Hayes, but …

Reservations remain on what impact it will have on witnesses, victims.
Lake County State’s Attorney candidate Chris Kennedy remembers the intrusion, the lack of privacy. Twelve years ago, Kennedy’s cousin was abducted and murdered in Tennessee. “She was missing for a while, and in the media while they tried to find her,” said Kennedy, one of three Democratic candidates who resides in Libertyville and practices law in Lake Forest. “It was very difficult for the family to deal with. They were not afforded the privacy to grieve.” That experience leaves Kennedy with mixed feelings over the recent Illinois Supreme Court ruling that will allow cameras into the state’s circuit courts for the first time. The pilot program allows the media to use both still and video cameras to record civil and criminal proceedings, …

Candidates for General Assembly, Lake County State’s Attorney and other offices will battle for party nominations.
At least seven primary races are taking shape as candidates began filing petitions Monday for the March 20 Illinois primary election to earn spots on the ballot to qualify for the Nov. 6 general election. Candidates for all offices except the United States House of Representatives began turning in their paperwork. The deadline is 5 p.m. Monday. The filing period for Congress begins Dec. 23 and ends Dec. 27. While a number of nominations are uncontested, contests are emerging for the Illinois General Assembly, Lake County State’s Attorney, Lake County Recorder, Lake County Coroner and the Lake County Board. With Drury out of the picture, Hayes has more cash on hand than everyone else combined.
Scott Drury’s departure from the race to succeed retiring Lake County State’s Attorney Mike Waller to run for the Illinois General Assembly leaves Lake Bluff resident Louise Hayes with more money in the bank than the rest of the field combined. Drury dropped out of the campaign for the Democratic nomination on Oct. 25 in an effort to replace state Rep. Karen May (D-Highland Park), who is retiring at the end of her term. That leaves Libertyville resident and Lake Forest attorney Chris Kennedy competing with Assistant Lake County State’s Attorney Reginald Mathews of Waukegan and Mundelein attorney Karen Williams for the Democratic nomination. Hayes, an assistant Lake County State’s Attorney, is one of three candidates seeking the …

Retiring state senator credits Morrison for keeping taxes low in West Deerfield Township.
West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison officially started her campaign to replace retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) with Garrett’s endorsement before a crowd of more than 50 supporters Thursday at a Deerfield restaurant. No other democrats have declared their candidacy to seek the nomination to succeed Garrett in the March 20 primary. Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman has said he will run as a Republican. Candidates have started circulating petitions for the primary. “Julie (Morrison) has 14 years of experience as a township supervisor and knows first-hand how to balance budgets and operate an organization without debt,” Garrett said. “West Deerfield Township has the lowest tax rate of any township in …

Schneider and Sheyman disagree over Bush-era tax cuts.
The two Democrats vying to unseat Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) exchanged sharp words at a Moraine Township Democratic Organization barbecue Saturday in Highland Park. Waukegan community organizer Ilya Sheyman said that Deerfield management consultant Brad Schneider was unwilling to end the Bush-era tax cuts during a speech to more than 50 people. “Unlike Brad Schneider, I want to roll back the Bush tax cuts so we can put people back to work,” Sheyman said. When Sheyman finished speaking, Schneider put up his hand to correct his opponent’s statement. “I won’t put words into your mouth," Shneider said, "Don’t put them into mine.” The claim came after Schneider's address, which did not include any mention of his tax policy. When both …

Winter "will bring new leadership and plans to the Office of State’s Attorney."
The field of candidates to become Lake County’s state’s attorney grew by one Tuesday when Waukegan attorney and Lake Barrington resident Bryan Winter said he would seek the Republican nomination for the job held by long time incumbent Michael Waller. Waller, also a Republican, has not said whether he would seek another term. He did not return calls to Patch Tuesday for comment. Winter said he made his decision anticipating the position would be open. Lake Forest lawyer and Libertyville citizen Chris Kennedy announced his candidacy for the Democratic nod Thursday. While Kennedy has specifically criticized the lack of a conviction integrity unit in the state’s attorney’s office to make sure DNA evidence is used to increase certainty about …
