State's Attorney candidates Chris Kennedy and Mike Nerheim participated in Sunday's League of Women Voters Lake County Administrative Offices Debate.
The Lake County State's Attorney office has been attracting national media attention since 2011, when a scandal involving multiple counts of wrongful convictions came out. Democratic candidate Chris Kennedy and Republican Mike Nerheim discussed their visions for restoring the integrity of the office at the League of Women Voter's Lake County Administrative Offices Debate on Sunday afternoon. Holiis Burgess moderated the debate, with the audience submitting the questions anonymously. One letter has sparked a heated debate between two Patch editors, and we need our readers to settle this once and for all.
Joanna Schneider, editor of Glenview Patch, recently noticed that Stan Golovchuk, editor of Northbrook Patch, was writing "in the North Shore" when referring to local news. She pointed this out to him and advised he use "on" instead. She insists this the appropriate attribution, and a few of their colleagues seem to agree. Golovchuk did not appreciate the advice, not one bit. A fight broke out — words were said, pans were thrown and still no clear winner emerged from the debate. Both sides made some strong points. "Towns such as Northbrook and Glenview, which consider themselves part of the North Shore, are not along the lake," Golovchuk said. "Therefore, they wouldn't be on the Shore, they're in it. The tournament, held Friday and Saturday at HPHS, attracted debate teams from across the state for two days of legislative argument.
It's Saturday afternoon, and 500-some-odd students are milling around Highland Park High School's hallway, chatting in small groups, sometimes disappearing into classrooms or bathrooms. These kids are comfortable in suits, in starched blistering-white collared shirts, in black skirts and heels and at least one pink shirt/bow tie/mohawk combo that is, quite frankly, awesome. All the finery is in honor of the Illinois Congressional Debate Association tournament, this one hosted by Highland Park, which has just ended. Debate teams are here from high schools around the state, many of which are substantial drives and overnight stays away. The students have spent nearly eight hours debating a variety of topics over the past day and a half. They…
