Should Federal Government Restore Impact Aid Now?

Sequester costing schools in Deerfield, Highland Park and Glenview $140,000.

Did you know the Sequester, which forced spending cuts on the Federal government earlier this year is taking money out of schools in Highland Park, Glenview and Deerfield? Schools in these communities receive approximately $140,000 a year to cover the cost of educating children of military parents. That stopped when the Sequester went into effect, according to school officials. Earlier: Kirk, Durbin Schneider Tour New School as Sequester Removes Shine Congress restored money for air traffic controllers cut by the Sequester to ease flight delays. Patch wants to know if you think local schools should get the same treatment as the airline industry and has prepared an unscientific poll to gauge your opinion. Township High School District 113, …

I've said it before, I'll say it again - if he Feds think that kids can be educated for $X, then give them $X in services. If they don't like that, then let them build and operate their own schools. And before anyone flies off the handle - I'm not trying to diminish the sacrifices the military and their families make - I greatly appreciate and respect that. I'm trying to make the point that we …   more ›

Highland Park High School Ranked Among Toughest in Illinois

Highland Park High School is among the most challenging public high schools in the United States, according to annual rankings by the Washington Post.

Does your teenager complain about classes and homework at Highland Park High School? He or she might be justified in griping. According to annual rankings created by the Washington Post, HPHS is among the most challenging public high schools in the country. In Illinois, Highland Park High School ranks 16. Washington Post columnist Jay Mathews has rated public high schools around the country for the past 15 years based on something called the “Challenge Index,” according to a press release. William, agreed. as a hphs graduate I have seen a decline in the output of graduates. Like I have said in a previous post: How can one be given a Diploma from a prestigious High School, when two syllable words cannot be spelled correctly? I hear it is impossible to "fail", everyone graduates!! They end up failing in life because they did not have the proper school support.   more ›

Warriors Top Giants in Gym, on Field

One gymnastics team for years, Deerfield High School defeats Highland Park in first meeting between the two. Warrior Lacrosse squad downs Giants as well.

For years, Deerfield and Highland Park High Schools joined forces in boys’ gymnastics to field a coop team and it regularly placed well in the State Meet.  This season, the program grew strong enough for each school to have its own squad which meant the District 113 rival would be opponents rather than teammates for the first time.  In the first competition between the two, the Warriors outpointed the Giants, 122.75 to 101.5, in a quadrangular meet at Maine East. Both teams finished ahead of the Blue Demons and Maine South.  Though they compete as separate teams, the Warriors have one thing in common, Head Coach Doug Foerch. The arrangement is unique. He was the long time mentor of the joint program. There was still plenty of support among…

Letter to the Editor: Thanks for Your Support

Deerfield High School student who worked to pass the $89 million referendum is grateful for passage.

Dear Community Members, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you with your support of the District 113 Referendum.  Your vote for yes is a reinvestment in education in Deerfield and Highland Park.  I am very excited about the changes because it will have a direct impact on students in time for the fall.  Students will be able to learn in environments suitable for learning.  Even though I won't benefit, many students will, including my freshman advisory and PE class, and that's all that matters to me.  I spent a lot of time promoting the referendum and getting out the vote.  Including me, there were a group of students at Deerfield High School (we named our group STIR -- Students Taking Initiative for the …

Letter to the Editor: Gordon for 113 Board

Reader touts Julie Starkman Gordon

Dear Editor,  District 113 is going through a critical time right now, and a change in our school board leadership in April can help ensure that our district continues on a path that balances educational excellence with sensible resource management. No one is more qualified to take on this role than Julie Starkman Gordon. As an involved and caring parent, an experienced and passionate volunteer for Junior Achievement USA, and a business professional who is uniquely positioned to understand the ins and outs of the district budget and pension issues, there is no better candidate to take on the careful stewardship of our high schools.  I have known Ms. Gordon for many years, and this community can count on her for sound judgment, clear-headed…

Referendum Foes Get Outside Help

Deerfield High School students produce videos showing why they think campus needs renovations.

Update 4/9 at 12:30 p.m.: Education First issued a statement today saying that there is "no affiliation between Education First and Americans for Prosperity." From Education First Communications Director Peter Lucas: This past Sunday, Joe Hahn offered his help to distribute literature on behalf of Education First as his parents still live in District 113. No other members of Americans for Prosperity participated in this effort. The other dozen people Mr. Hahn referred to are all Education First members that have no affiliation with Americans for Prosperity. In speaking with The Patch, Mr. Hahn took it upon himself to suggest that he recruited other members of Americans for Prosperity, when that it is not the case. His remarks to The Patch …

I love the comments of the Rental property experts here and the keen analysis provided... I know for a sad fact, that Real estate taxes in this area on even the most affordable residences are usually so onerous that it is virtually impossible to break even on any rental property in either city, unless purchased in a foreclosure or other distress sale. Letter to the Editor: Support the Referendum

Reader lays out the reasons he supports the $89 million renovation program for Deerfield and Highland Park High Schools.

Why I support the Referendum (as simply as I can state it)  Our High School facilities are antiquated.  They do not measure up to current standards, falling far behind those of every high school in the Northern Suburbs. Niles West & North, the Glenbrooks, Stevenson, Lake Forest, Gurnee schools, Vernon Hills, Libertyville,  – all have facilities that have been upgraded numerous times while our schools have been mired, not only in the last century – but the middle of the last century , and in the case of the B and C buildings at Highland Park High School, the early 20th century.  Our teachers and students shine despite incredibly inferior facilities.  That shouldn’t be ok in our community.   Unlike most of the Ed. 1st leadership, I have …
