Relay For Life Spawns Hope

Hundreds circle Adams Field track Saturday to raise awareness of cancer and money to fight it.

Circling the Adams Field track with a message of hope, more than 300 people participated in the annual Deerfield-Highland Park Relay For Life Saturday at Deerfield High School. The event is a major fundraising and awareness event sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Donna Lee Caringella of Highland Park told the crowd at the opening ceremonies about her diagnosis just under two years ago and how she is now in remission. Deerfield’s Janet Goldberg talked to Patch about her 13-year battle with the disease. “When something stops working my doctor tells me about something new to try,” Goldberg said of her survival for seven years with Stage 4 Cancer. Relay For Life Opens Saturday

Jenny Maltas, whose Relay team is one of the top 10 fundraising squads in the state, was a force behind the scenes.

When the Deerfield-Highland Park Relay For Life circles the Adams Field Track at Deerfield High School from 6 p.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. Sunday, not many people will know how Jenny Maltas was a force behind the scenes. Maltas, an assistant to Deerfield Village Manager Kent Street, has been part of the nationwide event since her mother was diagnosed with cancer 12 years ago. Her team, Courtney’s Crusaders, is one of the top ten fundraising groups in Illinois within the organization.
