City Fell Behind in Hydrant Maintenance

Mayor Rotering describes how the city is working to make sure all fire hydrants in the city are inspected.

As you know, we recently began an investigation into fire safety in our City. We started with the City-owned Port Clinton Garage, Highland Park Movie Theater, and other City-owned buildings. Inspections of other areas have ensued as well. As that investigation continued, it came to our attention that our 1,715 fire hydrants had not been sufficiently maintained (flushed for sediment build-up and tested for water pressure). "Because our staff was cut in other areas as well, they simply could not complete the biennial inspections." I'm not trying to play armchair quarterback, but at first blush it certainly sounds as if the then-Public Works Director didn't allocate resources accordingly. I'm not saying that she did or didn't.
