Girls Basketball: Giants Lose to Glenbrook North

Spartans win 60-41 at Mundelein Turkey Tournament.

The Glenbrook North Spartans topped defending Central Suburban League North champion Highland Park 60-41 at the Mundelein Turkey Tournament Wednesday night.  GBN opened the tournament with a 54-50 win over Grayslake North and Highland Park beat the host Mustangs 64-51 the night before. The Spartans won each quarter to gradually build up the lead for an impressive and comfortable win. Only four Giants got on the scoreboard, with all-conference junior Lena Munzer scoring a game-high 21 points. The Giants lost three all-conference players from last year’s 18-9 team--Lauren Evans, Emily Feldman and Briana Collier--and are trying to find someone to support Munzer, who poured in 31 in the opener. Morgan Bartelstein had 12 in the win over …

Read the in-depth recap: Second-Half Play Proves Giant Killer Highland Park's Andrew Chang gave the Giants an early lead, scoring just over three minutes into the game. However, Deerfield senior goalkeep Josh Norris would hold the Giants in check the rest of the game. Deerfield tied the game when Joey Calistri's pass was deflected by Tristian Pennick into the Highland Park net for an own-goal.  Jason Kayne provided the …

Early promise fades into a 37-13 loss as Highland Park remains winless so far this season.

In another tough night for the Highland Park Giants last Friday, the high school football team lost 37-13 to the New Trier Trevians and took its record to 0-3 for the season. Earlier: Giants Falter Against Lake Forest There were signs of hope for the Giants early on, but costly mistakes prevented the team from making any magic happen.  Head coach Hal Chiodo was quick to recognize his players’ efforts. “I’m extremely proud of how our guys played tonight; they showed a lot of guts out there,” he said. New Trier broke out to an early lead with a 30-yard pass from senior quarterback Jack Nykaza to junior wide receiver Devin Hoehm that completed a four-play drive that consumed 1 minutes and 29 seconds off the clock.  After the Giants blocked …

VIDEO: Giants Stumble in Season Opener

Highland Park loses to Elk Grove 39-12.

See video above for a recap of Highland Park vs. Elk Grove last Friday, as well as the rest of the Central Suburban League North. The Deerfield football team entered the season with hopes of much more balanced offensive attack than in years past.  However, a hand injury to starting quarterback Brad Holway left the Warriors with a one dimensional offense in their season opening 27-13 loss to Zion-Benton. "Life happens sometimes and those were the cards we were dealt this week," Deerfield Head Coach Steve Winiecki said of the injury to Holway. "Matt (Kollada) and Marc Pagano came in and got after it.  I don't question our kids effort. We just have to play better football." With Holway on the sidelines, Deerfield rotated quarterbacks, …

Patch Football Preseason Rankings

Other than Nate Echt, HPHS will depend on newcomers this season.

Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s best football teams. While power rankings take season record into consideration, more recent results and news, including known injuries, have a bigger influence than early season victories or losses. They also are completely and utterly subjective in evaluating the teams in the Central Suburban leagues PRESEASON RANKINGS Check here for the Central Suburban North league schedule or here for the Central Suburban South league schedule as part of the Illinois High School Association's listings. Spartans Down Giants to Sweep Season Series

Glenbrook North's volleyball win pushed Highland Park out of a tie for first place in their conference.

A three-set loss to Glenbrook North (GBN) in the schools' first matchup of the season gave Highland Park's boys volleyball team plenty of hope heading into Tuesday's rematch at home. However, a balanced and consistent GBN attack was too much for the Giants to handle as the Spartans downed Highland Park in straight sets (25-22, 25-13) and reclaimed first place of the Central Suburban League (CSL) North heading into Thursday's rematch at Niles North. "I hope this will be a wake-up call heading into the postseason," said the Giants head coach, Earl Alexander. "We've played pretty well for most of the season, played through a lot of adversity and today was just a tough day. "Maybe we put too much pressure on ourselves, feeling that whoever was…

Patch Boys Basketball Rankings

The Giants got a nice victory over Maine South, but still remained at #8 in Patch's power rankings.

Sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s best basketball teams. While power rankings take season record into consideration, more recent results and news, including known injuries, have a bigger influence than early-season victories or losses. And they are completely and utterly subjective. Last week’s ranking is shown in parentheses. 1. Niles North (1) – Andre Shaw’s buzzer-beater over Deerfield gave the Vikings their CSL North championship. And it was nice to see that the Vikings can win without a big game from Nader. With their regular season goals accomplished, the Vikings look toward a potential showdown with GBN in the playoffs. 2. Glenbrook North (2) – The Spartans earned a share of their 10th straight CSL North …

And they are completely and utterly subjective. Last week’s ranking is shown in parentheses. 1. Niles North (1) – The Vikings struggled against Maine East in the first half on Senior Night, but showed their improved defense can carry the team when shots aren’t falling. Their matchup against Deerfield could give them their first CSL North championship in more than a decade. Expect them to get it. 2. Glenbrook North (2) – Minus a couple key contributors, the Spartans still managed to eke …
