Proposed Lake Cook Road Apartments Fill Variety of Needs

With primary focus on young people, developer sees empty nesters and seniors.

A proposed 240-unit apartment development near Lake Cook Road and the Tri-State Tollway in Deerfield may be intended for young professionals, but developer AMLI Companies sees a variety of people occupying the building when done. The project got its first vote of approval from the Deerfield Village Board of Trustees Monday though AMLI has some tweaking to do before it gets the final nod. Most of the changes involve car and pedestrian traffic patterns. Earlier: Village Questions Developer of 240 Apartments Though the primary focus of the project will be catering to what AMLI Executive Vice President Stephen Ross describes as “young urban professionals,” he sees an appeal to empty nesters and seniors. “This is a good location for an urban …

Effort Made To Ease Lake Cook Construction Burden

Completion of project will start in April with plan to be done by end of October.

Intervention by Deerfield officials and the local business community will hopefully reduce the inconvenience scheduled to begin in April when Lake Cook and Waukegan Roads go under construction. When the first phase of the work was completed in 2011, delays on Lake Cook Road of over an hour between the Tri-State Tollway and Waukegan Road were not uncommon. Earlier: Lake Cook 2013 Roadwork Plan Unveiled This time, officials from Deerfield and Northbrook got involved with the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways and a plan was developed to keep people informed of progress and avoid some of the delays. Cook County officials did not sugarcoat the effect of the changes. “It’s going to be tough getting in and out (of commercial …

RE: Putting shoppers in the stores Too bad the village wasn't sharp enough to use some of the money to make the area more accessible and welcoming to pedestrians. Oh well, another lost opportunity due to poor planning and a lack of creativity. Can somebody in the village please become more proactive and politically astute with these government projects and use them to our advantage rather than …   more ›

Local Mayors Place Bet on Pizza Bowl

Harriet Rosenthal and Nancy Rotering put their money and mouths behind education in Highland Park and Deerfield.

With the best pizza among participating Deerfield and Highland Park eateries on the line at Pizza Bowl 2013 Sunday at Deerfield High School, Mayors Nancy Rotering of Highland Park and Harriet Rosenthal of Deerfield have placed a bet on the outcome. Pizza from eight different restaurants will be available from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Deerfield High School. People can sample as many as they like and vote for their favorite. A trophy goes to the winner and the event will be more expensive for Rosenthal or Rotering. Earlier: Sample Deerfield, Highland Park Pizza at Pizza Bowl 2013 Should a Highland Park pizzeria be chosen the winner, Rosenthal will make a $25 donation to the District 113 Foundation while Rotering will contribute $10. Borders Closing Spurred Plan for Deerbrook Area

When the former Borders and George’s What’s Cooking became medical office buildings, Mayor Rosenthal set Lake Cook Road Corridor action plan in motion.

When the former Borders and George’s What’s Cooking became destined to be medical office buildings, Deerfield Mayor Harriet Rosenthal wanted to do something to preserve the retail character of the Village’s Lake Cook Corridor. The situation was compounded when two large stores at Deerbrook Mall—Best Buy and Wonder!—closed as well. Rosenthal wanted action and asked the Plan Commission to develop a remedy. Earlier: Village Moves To Strengthen Deerbrook Area The solution developed by the Plan Commission, if it ultimately becomes an ordinance, will ease the way for retailers to open in south Deerfield and will implement some requirements to mandate retail use like the Village has had downtown for more than 20 years. When Deerfield decided to …

Has any progress been made at Deerbrook? We've seen CVS open at 41 and Park Ave and Walmart working hard to open in Northbrook. Shopping Centers are again finding investors. What's new with Deerbrook? Now, we've lost Bally's. Can anyone get that WONDER sign taken down and those papered over windows dressed up a little? How about the board making property owners remove old signage?   more ›

Walgreens Puts Corporate Citizenship on Display

Toys for Tots is just one of many ways the Deerfield based company gets involved in local communities.

Walgreens corporate citizenship was on display Monday when employees at the company’s Deerfield corporate headquarters helped two United States Marines load a truck full of holiday gifts as part of the Toys for Tots program. The drive took place not only at the corporate headquarters but at Walgreens 8,000 stores throughout the country with the toys staying in the local communities throughout the nation. Earlier: Cancer Survivors Unify With a Purpose The Toy for Tots partnership with the United States Marine Corps and the Ellen DeGeneres show is just one example of Walgreens’ effort to be a giving member of not just the North Suburban community, but all over the United States. “We want to help our local communities,” Director of Cause …

Deerfield gets no sales tax revenue for this at all. Why promote a business that provides nothing for your community but increased costs to you. The perceived savings are not real, you will just pay in other ways like in your real estate taxes. At least Jewel contributes to help the Village and community.   more ›

Jewel’s Uncertainty Curbs Deerbrook Enthusiasm

Parent company of Chicagoland grocery chain is told to find a buyer.

Uncertainty surrounding the future of Jewel’s parent company, Supervalu, and the economy in general led the owners of Deerbrook Mall to regroup with plans to renovate the Deerfield shopping center. Gateway Fairview, the owners of the mall, had planned a major overhaul which involved moving Jewel into a new, modern store where Best Buy just closed. Other changes included relocating TJ Maxx to an outdoor location at the north end of the center. Earlier: Deerbrook Owners Pull Plug on Renovation Mall ownership had proposed a partnership with the Village enabling it to recoup a portion of its $26 million redevelopment expenses through property tax incentives and the Village Board of Trustees was working with Gateway Fairview to refine it. That …

Why not try it? The reduced costs of fuel and drivers for delivery probably makes drive thru a good business proposition for Peapod. Near the train station, and expy exits. Some people aren't home for the delivery, but can do drive thru. Can't hurt. As for Deerbrook....I hope they fire all the geniuses who have been working on this project and get some actual ideas on the table. Good luck to us!   more ›

Village Examines Details of Deerbrook Deal

Trustees and Village officials making sure the total effect on Deerfield will be positive.

A complete understanding of the financial impact of the Deerbrook Mall renovation on Deerfield is the reason it could take the Village as long as three months from the initial presentation by the shopping center owners to arrive at an agreement. The original proposal made to the Board of Trustees June 18 asked for forms of sales tax assistance to help shopping center owner Gateway Fairview offset $16 million of the estimated $26 million cost of redevelopment. Earlier: Village Continues Negotiations With Deerbrook The two-pronged proposal called for recoupment of $10 million from a sales tax sharing agreement and $6 million from an additional one percent sales tax from the project’s first phase which would apply only to the shopping center …
