A proposed 240-unit apartment development near Lake Cook Road and the Tri-State Tollway in Deerfield may be intended for young professionals, but developer AMLI Companies sees a variety of people occupying the building when done. The project got its first vote of approval from the Deerfield Village Board of Trustees Monday though AMLI has some tweaking to do before it gets the final nod. Most of the changes involve car and pedestrian traffic patterns. Intervention by Deerfield officials and the local business community will hopefully reduce the inconvenience scheduled to begin in April when Lake Cook and Waukegan Roads go under construction. When the first phase of the work was completed in 2011, delays on Lake Cook Road of over an hour between the Tri-State Tollway and Waukegan Road were not uncommon. Harriet Rosenthal and Nancy Rotering put their money and mouths behind education in Highland Park and Deerfield.
With the best pizza among participating Deerfield and Highland Park eateries on the line at Pizza Bowl 2013 Sunday at Deerfield High School, Mayors Nancy Rotering of Highland Park and Harriet Rosenthal of Deerfield have placed a bet on the outcome. Pizza from eight different restaurants will be available from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Deerfield High School. People can sample as many as they like and vote for their favorite. A trophy goes to the winner and the event will be more expensive for Rosenthal or Rotering. When the former Borders and George’s What’s Cooking became destined to be medical office buildings, Deerfield Mayor Harriet Rosenthal wanted to do something to preserve the retail character of the Village’s Lake Cook Corridor. The situation was compounded when two large stores at Deerbrook Mall—Best Buy and Wonder!—closed as well. Rosenthal wanted action and asked the Plan Commission to develop a remedy. Toys for Tots is just one of many ways the Deerfield based company gets involved in local communities.
Walgreens corporate citizenship was on display Monday when employees at the company’s Deerfield corporate headquarters helped two United States Marines load a truck full of holiday gifts as part of the Toys for Tots program. The drive took place not only at the corporate headquarters but at Walgreens 8,000 stores throughout the country with the toys staying in the local communities throughout the nation. Online grocery supplier Peapod became Deerfield’s newest business Tuesday when it opened a drive-through facility at 677 Lake Cook Road near Deerlake Road enabling shoppers to save the delivery charge. The Deerfield location is the second one for the company. Uncertainty surrounding the future of Jewel’s parent company, Supervalu, and the economy in general led the owners of Deerbrook Mall to regroup with plans to renovate the Deerfield shopping center. Gateway Fairview, the owners of the mall, had planned a major overhaul which involved moving Jewel into a new, modern store where Best Buy just closed. Other changes included relocating TJ Maxx to an outdoor location at the north end of the center. The on line grocery company is moving from a strictly personal delivery of food and related items to a pilot program of drive through facilities and one of the first in the country will be in the Village. A complete understanding of the financial impact of the Deerbrook Mall renovation on Deerfield is the reason it could take the Village as long as three months from the initial presentation by the shopping center owners to arrive at an agreement. The original proposal made to the Board of Trustees June 18 asked for forms of sales tax assistance to help shopping center owner Gateway Fairview offset $16 million of the estimated $26 million cost of redevelopment. In the seemingly constant drumbeat of news regarding a lethargic economy, all positive developments are welcome so when it was announced Friday Walgreen’s would be adding a sizable number of jobs near its Deerfield home base, there were smiles all around. Through a deal with the state laden with tax incentives, Walgreen’s will add 500 jobs throughout the drug store giant’s local headquarters and other surrounding communities. These will be corporate jobs promised to focus on Walgreen’s online activities as well as pharmacy, health and wellness services.
