Highland Park Community Foundation Breaks Funding Record for Grants, Scholarships

Local foundation comes through with $131,700 to Highland Park and Highwood agencies.

The information below comes from the Highland Park Community Foundation. Times are tough when it comes to finding revenue sources for social service, cultural, educational and environmental agencies these days. Between governmental cuts and reductions in funding from previously reliable sources, it has become more difficult than ever for Highland Park and Highwood agencies to make ends meet. But when the economy is bad, the need for the services these agencies provide to at-risk and under serviced citizens become even greater. Award Leaves 'Kid Whisperer' Speechless

Northwood Junior High teacher Chris Janzen was surprised during a school assembly Friday when he received the Highland Park Community Foundation’s Golden Apple Award for outstanding teaching.

Chris Janzen did not see this coming. During a May 25 assembly at Northwood Junior High where the biggest news seemed to be that the sixth graders wouldn't be sitting on the floor at assemblies next school year (they'd be sitting in the bleachers marked for seventh graders), the English and humanities teacher stood off to the side, calmly smiling at his students. Then Highland Park Community Foundation Committee Chair Susan Benjamin took the microphone to discuss the Golden Apple Award. "My heart started beating in my chest," Janzen said later.
