Hey Vibe - Thanks for the comment. Yes, 100K for Athlete of the Week is obviously high. We're aware of the glitch and our engineering team is working toward a solution. Also, you can read our editorial piece regarding the matter here: http://patch.com/A-pJC9   more ›

High School Hall of Fame Inducts Six Athletes

Inductees include perhaps the school's best female athlete and a former NBA first pick.

All of us should have a friend like Lori Weisskopf.  When she returned to Highland Park High School for a 20-year reunion, she toured the school with her friend Louise Sadowsky Brock. Then she noticed the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in the school.  And then she got mad. Where was the three-sport star Sadowsky anyway? "She made girls sports cool," Weisskopf said. "She was the epitome of what sports is all about. She did it all." Weisskopf went to work, and last Friday Cincinnati-based attorney Sadowsky Brock made another run to Highland Park. Sadowsky Brock is the lone female inductee this time around. The induction ceremony, held last Friday night, inducted former hoops stars Gene Melchiorre and Bob George, swimmer John Robbins, …

Highland Park Basketball Stays at No. 11

Patch's latest basketball power rankings.

Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s basketball teams. Niles West, Loyola and Glenbrook North made waves at early holiday tournaments, but a number of girls teams struggled. All of the area’s boys teams were off, resting and preparing for a full slate of games between Christmas and New Years. New Trier and Glenbrook North will go to the always-tough Proviso West tournament while Glenbrook South and Highland Park will try out the first annual Hinsdale South tournament. For all teams, this is the last batch of non-conference games before the meat of their conference schedules get under way in 2012. Last week’s ranking is in parentheses. WEEK 6 RANKINGS 1. New Trier  (1) – Both of New Trier’s basketball teams were off …

Highland Park Basketball Falls Four Spots

Check out Patch Basketball Rankings for the week.

Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s basketball teams. Basketball teams got their last games in before participating in holiday tournaments over the next two weeks. New Trier and Maine South have separated themselves so far as the two schools with above-average boys and girls teams, but the next four aren’t too far off. Glenbrook North, Evanston, Niles North and Deerfield all jumped two spots from last week while Highland Park had the biggest drop, going from seventh to 11th. Last week’s ranking is in parentheses. WEEK 5 RANKINGS 1. New Trier  (1) – New Trier’s 54-53 win over Waukegan showed they have the ability to win tough games on the road. Yet Waukegan’s effort also means New Trier is anything but invincible. …

Patch's Basketball Rankings: Week 4

Highland Park jumped one spot to No. 7 in this week's rankings.

All the talk at the start of the girls season was about the three-team race for the CSL South title between Niles West, Maine South and New Trier. Yet in mid-December, the last remaining undefeated team is Glenbrook South. New Trier still seems to be the class of the CSL on the boys side, especially after Glenbrook North fell to Deerfield last week. Maine South jumped up to No. 2 and is our biggest riser this week. Meanwhile Glenbrook North fell down to No. 5. Last week’s ranking is in parentheses. WEEK 3 RANKINGS 1. New Trier  (1) – The boys took care of their first two CSL South games by easily dispatching of Niles West and Glenbrook South last week. But the girls stumbled twice, losing to Jewell Loyd’s Niles West team and Glenbrook …

Glory Days

Highland Park Linebacker Played for Notre Dame

Scott Smith offered football scholarships to about 20 schools.

It's really every football player's dream.  You are sitting in a classroom when, all of the sudden, your football coach comes to class and asks the teacher to talk with you. Uh-oh, is some equipment missing? Not in this case. It was Highland Park High School football coach Kurt Weinberg passing the news to student Scott Smith that Bowling Green University wanted to offer him a scholarship to play football in Ohio. "I was wondering if he was kidding me," Smith recalled. "I had no idea I was that good in football. I really thought of myself as a basketball player." Sure, Smith was a good basketball player. His coach at the time was Paul Harris. A 'dominating' high school player "Scott was a great competitor and the best rebounder I have ever…

Patch's Basketball Rankings: Week Two

Highland Park fell one spot after the boys team went 2-2 in the opening week.

The boys season got started during Thanksgiving week and most North Shore teams got to play four or five games thanks to holiday tournaments. New Trier won its own tournament and Glenbrook North took home the championship at Niles West. New Trier, Maine South and Niles West all stayed undefeated on the girls side. It will be really fun to watch these three teams battle once CSL South games hit the schedule. Last week’s ranking is in parentheses. PATCH PRESEASON RANKINGS 1. New Trier  (1) – Both teams captured tournament titles and remained undefeated on the young season. While the girls team has really been untested so far, the boys got a really nice victory over St. Ignatius in the finals of the New Trier / Loyola Thanksgiving Tournament…
