Six Highland Park Elementary Schools Named to State Academic Honor Roll

Six elementary schools in North Shore School District 112 were given the honor for sustaining high academic performance for three consecutive years.

North Shore School District 112 has been given high honors by the Illinois State Board of Education this week. The district has six schools named to the Academic Honor Roll and given the 2012 Academic Excellence Award. Braeside Elementary, Indian Trail Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Ravinia Elementary, Sherwood Elementary and Wayne Thomas Elementary are among 454 Illinois schools receiving the award. The schools honored all sustained high academic performances over the past three years. According to the Illinois State Board of Education, schools who receive the Academic Excellence Award must have at least 90 percent of elementary and middle students meeting or exceeding state standards in reading and math for three straight years. My children seem to be doing very well at Red Oak. In fact, my 5th grader scored higher then 98% of the children in the state on her ISAT tests. I think some of us might be misunderstanding how learning really takes place. It starts at home. Not at the school, be it Red Oak, Indian Trail or any other school in the district. Memorial Fund for 5 Year Old Killed by Car Raises $14,580 in One Day

Jessica Millen and Sara Gordon started a memorial fund for the Highland Park 5-year-old girl who was killed when a car drove onto the sidewalk on Central Avenue on Labor Day. Hours later, the fund had far surpassed its initial goal of $3,000.

Indian Trail School PTO co-presidents Jessica Millen and Sara Gordon set up a memorial fund Tuesday to raise money for the family of Jaclyn Santos-Sacramento, who was killed on Labor Day when a vehicle drove into a sidewalk as she was walking with her mother and two brothers. In only a few hours, the memorial fund raised $3,550. About 260 people had donated as of midnight on Tuesday, with some donating as much as $500.
