Carly Rousso Indicted in 5 Year Old's Death

A grand jury has charged the 18-year-old Highland Park resident who drove into a family on Labor Day, killing a 5-year-old girl, with reckless homicide and aggravated DUI.

A grand jury has indicted the 18 year old who drove into a Highland Park family on Central Avenue on Labor Day, killing a 5-year-old girl, on aggravated driving under the influence of an intoxicating compound and reckless homicide charges, according to the Lake County State's Attorney.  Jaclyn Santos-Sacramento: The Story So Far Highland Park resident Carly Rousso was driving eastbound on Central Avenue on Labor Day afternoon when she drifted across the road and into the sidewalk, hitting 25-year-old Modesta Sacramento and her three children. Jaclyn Santos-Sacramento, 5, was killed. Toxicology reports indicate that the compound Difluoroethane was detected in Rousso's blood, according to the grand jury indictment. The compound was found in …

Thanks for the comment, TJ. According to the indictment, Rousso was charged with two counts of reckless homicide: One based on the recklessness of her driving, and one based on the recklessness of her driving as a result of "intoxicating compound in her blood." I'm assuming this is similar to the DUI counts, where charges are not determined by the people affected but instead by a set of factors.   more ›

Mayor Frustrated By Delayed Investigation Into Fatal Car Crash

Mayor Nancy Rotering says she and the City Council are frustrated by the Lake County State's Attorney's delay in filing charges against the Highland Park teen who crashed her car into a mother and her three children on Labor Day, killing a 5-year-old.

Our community continues to grieve over the tragic death of 5‐year old Jaclyn Santos–Sacramento on Labor Day. As you may already know, Jaclyn was struck and killed by an 18‐year-old driver while she was walking with her family near downtown Highland Park. Her mother and younger brothers sustained injuries as well. This case, like other similar cases, is handled by the Lake County State's Attorney's Office. The decision to file charges is made by the Lake County State’s Attorney. The City Council, staff and I are frustrated by the delayed manner in which this case is being handled. Releasing the driver with no restrictions was a decision of the State’s Attorney. This was a mistake and we are demanding an explanation. We continue to urge the …

The Way We Work: Jobs That Are Gone

For Labor Day, Patch looks at how jobs have changed during the last century.

This is a story about jobs that, by and large, simply don’t exist in the United States anymore. Or if they do, are holding on by the fiber-optic thread that will soon extinguish the occupation for good. Some are ancient history, like the iceman who has not cometh since the Eisenhower Administration. And others – including the minimum wage Wal-Mart “greeter” - were here just yesterday. A LESS DISPOSABLE TIME At The Sun newspaper of Baltimore – where many wonder if reporters will eventually go the way of the typewriter (and the skilled folks who repaired them) – there used to be an aged, exceedingly polite elevator operator named Barney Barney. [Yes, his first name and his last name were – inexplicably - the same.] Though extraordinary …

Watch the video, and polish your career skills. U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis explains where to get help and resources.

The following information comes from the office of U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis.  LABOR DAY TIPS FROM THE U.S. LABOR SECRETARY by Hilda L. Solis On Labor Day 2012 and every day, one of my top priorities is to help those looking for work get the training they need for good-paying jobs. By 2020, 17 of the 30 fastest-growing occupations will require a postsecondary certificate or degree. In fact, employers are actively looking to fill nearly 4 million job openings in America right now. Getting the skills employers want and need are critical to a successful career. Here are a few tips: • Get started! Your first step is to check out your local American Job Center. These nearly 3,000 "one-stop-shops" are part of a nationwide network where …

The Way We Work: Graduating Job Hunters Play Waiting Game at Home

In a difficult economy, many graduates return to their childhood homes looking for work.

Many college graduates are finding themselves in a decidedly retro phenomenon, where economic independence starts from the security of their parents' homes. "What seems to be changing is not that kids are returning home for a while after college, but how long they are living at home before they can leave," said Lawrence Levy, executive dean of the National Center for Suburban Studies at Long Island's Hofstra University. That could have widespread implications for local communities. Changing economic dynamics and cultural shifts are among the reasons experts cite for the re-emergence of nuclear, multi-generational family homes not unlike family units of post-WWII America. More Kids at Home, Less Stigma A study by the Pew Research Center of …
