Suspicious Death of Highwood Restaurant Owner Resurfaces

Could there be a connection between the 2012 death of Highwood restaurateur Giacomo Ruggirello and a former Buffalo Grove resident accused in an extortion/murder plot?

Defense attorneys for Steven Mandell, an ex-Chicago cop from Buffalo Grove who is accused in a plot to extort and kill a Chicago real estate mogul, have subpoenaed the Highland Park Police Department for its records into the investigation of the Sept. 2012 death of Giacomo Ruggirello, who owned the Highwood restaurant Trattoria Giacomo, reported the Chicago Tribune. On Sept. 25, 2012, fire and police responded to a fire at Giacomo's home in the 1700 block of Midland Avenue, in Highland Park, shortly before 1 a.m. His badly burned body was found in the home, Patch reported. Coroner Identifies Man Who Died in House Fire

The Highland Park man who died in a house fire last month has been identified as Giacomo Ruggirello, who has owned the Trattoria Giacomo Restaurant in Highwood since 1998.

The Lake County coroner identified the body found in a burned out Highland Park house last month as that of Giacomo Ruggirello, the Highland Park News reports. At approximately 12:42 a.m. on Sept. 25, Highland Park Fire and Police responded to a fire on the 1700 block of Midland Avenue in Highland Park. Fire fighters from Highwood, Glencoe, Lake Forest and Northbrook also helped to extinguish the blaze, which spread to the roof next-door. Neighbors of the razed house told the Highland Park News the identity of the man in the fire was likely Giacomo Ruggirello, who has owned the Trattoria Giacomo Restaurant in Highwood since 1998. Body Recovered From Gages Lake Identified

Man's companion charged with a felony for leaving the scene of the fatal accident.

A 44-year-old man whose body was recovered from Gages Lake on Tuesday afternoon was identified by the Lake County Coroner as Richard Stoneking. His companion, Eric W. Oomens, 46, was charged with failure to stop or comply with requirements involving an accident, collision, casualty duty to report and render aid, a Class 2 Felony, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office. Newton, Rudd Victorious in Coroner Race

Coroner Artis Yancey of Waukegan was defeated Tuesday.

Coroner Artis Yancey of Waukegan lost his bid to stay in office Tuesday night to political newcomer Thomas Rudd of Lake Forest in the race for the Democratic nomination for Lake County coroner. According to unofficial totals, Rudd received 12,877 votes, or 53.78 percent, while Yancey received 11,066 votes, or 46.22 percent, in the Democratic primary. On the Republican side, Steve Newton of Antioch claimed victory over Howard Cooper of Bannockburn. Newton received 26,070 votes, or 56.14 percent, while Cooper garnered 20,370 votes, or 43.86 percent. The totals do not include provisional or late-arriving vote-by-mail ballots.   Like their counterparts running for Recorder of Deeds, the four candidates for Lake County Coroner debated over whether the county should maintain a coroner's office or move to a medical examiners system in Sunday's candidate forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Lake County (LWV) at the University Center in Grayslake. Dr. Thomas Rudd, a Lake Forest resident, is a Democratic candidate and has never held an elected office, but has run for the Lake County Sanitary District twice and lost. Former Waukegan Police Chief Artis Yancey has been appointed Lake County Coroner. Lake County Board Chairman David Stolman announced the decision at a press conference, Monday. The county board will vote on the appointment of Yancey at its April 12 meeting. Former coroner Dr. Richard Keller resigned in February after pleading guilty to felony charges of obstructing justice and unlawful delivery of a controlled substance. Charges Lead Lake County Coroner to Resign

After pleading guilty, Dr. Richard Keller steps down and sheriff fills vacancy on interim basis.

Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran is currently overseeing operations in the Coroner’s Office after Dr. Richard Keller resigned on Tuesday. Keller, the county's coroner, was charged with obstructing justice and unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, according to Lake County State's Attorney Michael Waller. Keller pled guilty to the two felony counts that alleged he provided methadone to staff and clients at the Green Dragonfly Clinic in Waukegan without proper medical exams. The doctor is accused of withholding the required documentation, which authorities had subpoenaed. After pleading guilty to both charges, Keller immediately resigned his post of six years on Tuesday, and is required to give up his medical license as well. Under …
