Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s basketball teams. Basketball teams got their last games in before participating in holiday tournaments over the next two weeks. New Trier and Maine South have separated themselves so far as the two schools with above-average boys and girls teams, but the next four aren’t too far off. Glenbrook North, Evanston, Niles North and Deerfield all jumped two spots from last week while Highland Park had the biggest drop, going from seventh to 11th. Last week’s ranking is in parentheses. WEEK 5 RANKINGS 1. New Trier (1) – New Trier’s 54-53 win over Waukegan showed they have the ability to win tough games on the road. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Dec. 12 - Dec. 18: Jacqui Grant, junior, girls basketball, Maine South – Grant had 17 points and 10 rebounds against CSL South-leading Glenbrook South in a 45-39 victory last week. The win over the previously undefeated Titans vaulted the Hawks into a tie for the CSL South lead. Vaughn Monreal-Berner, junior, wrestling, Niles West – Monreal-Berner took home the title in the 182-pound weight class at the Lake Park Ralph W. Krupke Classic last weekend. The Niles West junior is now 17-3 on the season and is looking to get to the state championships after getting to sectionals last year. More than 38,000 people voted during the week-long competition; see who came out on top.
Athlete of the Week for Nov. 14 - Nov. 20: Lena Munzer is this week's Patch Athlete of the Week. With more than 38,000 votes last week, the junior guard for Highland Park's girls basketball team was the runaway winner, capturing more than 65 percent of the vote. Munzer got off to a high-scoring start, pouring in 45 points against Grayslake North in the opening week. Honorable Mention - Brittany Collins, sophomore, basketball center, Maine West – The 6-foot center isn’t planning on having any sophomore slumps in her second varsity basketball season as she scored a game-high 20 points in Maine West’s season-opening 55-35 loss to Palatine on Nov. 14. Highland Park moved up five spots to No. 6 in the first week of the season.
The girls season got off to a quick start on Nov. 14 with local teams getting their first games in with holiday tournaments. The boys got their last practices in before opening the year this week so the movement and analysis in these rankings is only about the girls teams. New Trier made its opening statement with a dominating effort against Phillips and a quality win on the road at Loyola. Our first five saw no movement as the top teams took care of business and didn’t lose in the opening week. Last week’s ranking is in parentheses. PATCH PRESEASON RANKINGS 1.
