New Trier Gun Control Panelist Reacts to Protests

Bill Jenkins, a panelist at Sunday's gun control panel, discusses his stance in this letter to the editor.

To the Editor, I was the featured speaker at the New Trier Democrats’ event on gun violence last Sunday. Word had gone out from the Illinois State Rifle Association warning that this would be a “recruitment andorganizational rally” and “These are the people leading the charge to raid your gun safe and confiscateand destroy your guns. … These are the people who don't care if you or your family members are raped, robbed and murdered by violent criminals. They only care about one thing - disarming you.” Althoughnot at all true, it was with this incitement that gun advocates came from all over the state to our littleevent, loaded for bear, as it were. From the moment they hijacked the meeting’s agenda by turning the Pledge of Allegiance into …

Letter to the Editor: Schneider for Congress

Former Lake County Board Member Carol Spielman supports Brad Schneider.

I look for leadership in deciding who I want to represent me in congress.  I also look for someone who stands up for the issues important to me.  Women’s health issues is high on that list. Any assessment of Congressman Bob Dold’s stance on women’s health issues is that he does not  lead or stand up for women when it matters. I was there in 1973 when women were granted the right to make their own decisions about their own bodies.  This momentous decision for women will always need legislative reinforcement.  Supporting that right should include supporting the institutions that care about women’s health by providing basic health services.   Bob Dold voted for the “Protect Life Act” - also known as the “Let Women Die Act.”  This amendment …

Elect Schneider for 'a Real Voice of Moderation'

Letter to the editor

It is ironic that the often cited bipartisan bill that is used to argue about Bob Dold's moderation really shows he supports driving jobs overseas and severely altering Medicare. It is pointed out that Dold co/sponsored with a mere handful of Republicans and Democrats the Cooper Latourette debt reduction plan which  Schneider has made clear he would not have supported. If those citing this purported sign of moderation would have shared the details of the Cooper plan it would have shown Dold's true colors, since as noted by the Center on Budget Policy and Priorities it would be clear that this bill which Dold co-sponsored would 1) provide exemptions for foreign profits which would Encourage tax avoidance and shift jobs overseas 2) the …

Letter to the Editor: Brin for Court Clerk

Incumbent Sally Coffelt endorses Keith Brin to succeed her.

I’ve been honored and humbled to be your Lake County Circuit Clerk for the last 8 terms, but in 2011 I made the decision not to run again and instead retire at the end of this term. Since the first day I took office we’ve worked under a certain philosophy: do more with less, stay within our budget, and make customer service a priority. I could not have asked for a more perfect opportunity in a more perfect job, and I have the people of Lake County to thank for allowing me to work in public service to the best of my ability for so long. Shortly after the last election I hired a bright young man, Keith Brin, to be my Chief Deputy. As an attorney, Keith brought in a different perspective, and with it, additional creativity and innovation. …

Letter to the Editor: Kennedy for State's Attorney

A letter to the editor from Deer Park resident Larry Garascia.

Barrington Patch accepts and publishes Letters to the Editor sent to Editor Morgan Delack by email at morgan@patch.com. Please note in the subject that this is a Letter to the Editor.  My wife and I have known Chris Kennedy for more than ten years.  Besides being a steady friend, we're impressed by Chris's ability to manage times of adversity with both energy and good judgment.  Chris Kennedy hopes to replace the Lake County State's Attorney in the November election.  I think he is greatly qualified to do so.  Because of a series of very poor decisions, the Lake County State's Attorney has become the target of some unflattering national media attention.  These poor decisions have resulted in costly lawsuits against the State's Attorney …

Ditto! I think we are lucky to have an outstanding candidate like Chris Kennedy. Since it is a local election as oppose to national, I hope the voters are informed and know that Chris is the best choice.   more ›

Elect Schneider for Continued Recovery

Letter to the editor

I believe all elections are a referendum on what kind of people we are and what kind of people we want to be, and the November elections are no exception. I am especially focused on the Congressional race in my district which pits Democrat Brad Schneider against incumbent Republican Robert Dold. A vote for Congressman Dold is a vote to keep Republicans in control of the House of Representatives and a continuation of abhorrent practices such as imposed inequality (marriage is rationed only to those approved by the GOP) and militant opposition to compromise as a solution to an electorate that is evenly split on nearly every issue. As a veteran and a citizen who believes in national service for all, I am also disgusted with a Congress that …

Letters to the Editor: Lori Flores Weisskopf for Park District Board

Residents voice their support for one of seven park board candidates.

Highland Park’s park district is the one of the crown jewels making Highland Park the attractive, family-oriented community it is today. The future leadership of the board managing our park district is one of most important decisions this April facing Highland Park residents. I’m supporting Lori Flores Weisskopf in her campaign to join the park district board and to insure that the board serves our communities needs going forward and continues to build value for Highland Park. Beyond Lori’s professional career in public relations for the Chicago Bulls, it is her can-do attitude and drive that will serve our community well with Lori on the board. I’ve had the opportunity to work with Lori on a broad variety of initiatives in our roles as …
