Three plaintiffs were added to a lawsuit against Maine West High School that alleges coaches condoned hazing.
A lawsuit against Maine West High School alleges that students were hazed and bullied, sometimes at the behest of coaches of some athletic teams. A police investigation into a hazing incident this year led to charges against six students. During a “campus run” the boy’s teammates grabbed him, according to the lawsuit, tore off his underwear, held him down so he could not resist, grabbed his testicles and sodomized him with their fingers and other foreign objects. Des Plaines police told the Chicago Sun-Times that they sought felony charges in the case, but Cook County prosecutors disagreed. More than 1,480 ballots were cast in last week's competition and Maine West's Brittany Collins was named the Patch Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 29 - Feb. 5: Austin Curren, junior, boys basketball, North Shore Country Day – Curren has had point totals of 25, 28 and 32 points in three conference wins for the Raiders. During that time he’s shot 67 percent from the field (29/43) and has turned the ball over only five times. Curren is also averaging 5.5 rebounds per game. Molly Kleppin, junior, girls basketball, Niles West - Kleppin led the Wolves with 15 points in a tough win against Maine South. More than 1,480 ballots were cast in last week's competition and Maine West's Brittany Collins is this week's Patch Athlete of the Week. Collins recorded four straight double-doubles for the Warriors last week. She scored at least 17 points and brought down at least 11 rebounds in games against Lake Zurich, Fenwick, Maine East and Johnsburg, helping Maine West win in two of those contests. Highland Park guard Lena Munzer dominated Thursday's girls basketball game.
Star sophomore Lena Munzer scored 25 points and pulled down 13 rebounds as Highland Park High School ran past Maine West High School 63-45 in area girls basketball on Thursday. Munzer praised her teammates as she reflected on her career-high performance and the game itself. "It was really my teammates that got me open," she said. "They did a nice job. I tried to use my speed to my advantage against a taller player and get a step ahead of my opponent." The Central Suburban League North division was the backdrop as both schools staged this early conference battle.
