Highlands and Ravines

Through Tense Campaign Season, Character Still Counts

An admitted cynic looks on the bright side of Highland Park politics.

I recently had a cordial and respectful coffee at Starbucks with two readers who were on the other side of one of my recent columns. Though they disagreed with my opinion, they chose to talk openly and directly with me. One of them mentioned in context that he felt the need for us to talk because of the strong cynicism he has sensed in Highland Park since the Park District's pension spiking scandal came out last summer. I think he's right, and I'm here to admit I'm one of the cynics. In one of the heated comments about the April 5 election here on Patch, a reader remarked that Highland Park is supposed to be a place where "character counts." In fact, all over Highland Park, little folded-over stop signs hanging on the traffic signals …

Letters to the Editor: Residents Voice Support for Mayoral Candidates

Residents write in to support both Terri Olian and Nancy Rotering for mayor of Highland Park.

Rotering will do a better job with less For the past several years I have found myself nodding my head in agreement as I've opened the e-newsletter's I receive from Councilwoman Nancy Rodkin Rotering. She has educated me on the work of municipal government and engaged me in the issues facing our community. Her careful, thoughtful commentary and her leadership when it comes to making hard choices is evidenced each time I see how she votes.  She is connected to our community and she helps me to better connect to our community. Nancy's willingness to question the status quo and her capabilities to lead will allow Highland Park to do a better job with less and without continuing to use our financial reserves to balance our budget. This is an …

Letters to the Editor: Residents Voice Support for Mayoral Candidates

Letters of support for Terri Olian and Nancy Rotering.

Rotering a true leader We urge every voter in Highland Park to seriously consider what it will take to be our next Mayor and then cast your vote for Nancy Rotering. While we love living in our beautiful city, we have serious issues, and need a true leader in the Mayor’s Office to guide us through these times. Nancy understands that our next Mayor will need to provide the leadership necessary for all parts to work together to be successful. Under Nancy's leadership, the Office of Mayor will open lines of communications with the school district and park district; something that has been sorely missing for many, many years.    Nancy isn’t afraid to challenge the status quo and ask the tough questions, rather than dismissing an issue or …

Thanks! Bryce is a good friend of mine, and even though we differ on mayoral candidates we can have a meaningful discussion without tearing each other's heads off. The more people talk about issues, the environment will be much more conducive to civic engagement   more ›

Early Voting Begins in Highland Park

Mayoral choices draw split in informal poll, but District 113 referendum is a heavy favorite.

More than 45 people cast ballots in the first three hours of early voting Monday, with an informal exit poll of a third of those voters showing that they're evenly divided between the mayoral candidates but overwhelmingly in support of the District 113 schools' bond referendum.  Highland Park had the highest voter turnout in Lake County for the first day of early voting, with 111 people casting ballots. Vernon Township came in second with 45. Two candidates, mayoral hopeful Terri Olian and City Council contender Paul Frank, greeted voters at the Lake County North Shore Health Center at 1840 Green Bay Road. Frank was the third person to vote at the location. “I was the third person to vote and I’m third on the ballot,” he said. “I have …

One thing that I have noticed is that Terri's supporters have no problem posting under their names, while, with a few exceptions like Bill Schur, use either first name only or pseudonymn. Hard to take anyone seriously under those circumstances. As I have said, I served with Nancy on the Plan Commission. I like Nancy. I am dismayed by the tone and substance of her campaign. I am supporting Terri …   more ›

Endorsement Letter: Olian a 'Proven Leader'

Councilman Jim Kirsch endorses Terri Olian for mayor.

I am supporting Terri Olian because of her many years of productive hard work for our community. She is a compassionate, fiscally responsible and proven leader with great integrity. Her experience as a lawyer, community activist, family leader, school board member and many years of service as a City Councilman not only prepare her to be Mayor of Highland Park, they prove that she is an effective, respected, honest, hard working and caring community servant. She will be a great mayor, and our first woman as mayor, something we all are very excited about.  This is the first time in 40 years where no incumbents are seeking re-election. Please do not underestimate the loss to our community of the excellent retiring council members and the …

Long time citizen of Highland Park ( i went to grade school with both Jim and Nancy) I agree with Jim that the election should be about the issues not slander. That being said I must also say that I disagree with Jim that by electing Terri we will still have Nancy on the council. Leadership should be elected on merit not just because we will still maintain both of these highly qualified and …   more ›

Endorsement Letter: Rotering 'Will Serve Us Well'

Councilman Scott Levenfeld endorses Nancy Rotering for mayor.

As the April 5 election for Highland Park Mayor heats up, much had been discussed about the qualities and capabilities of the two candidates. The issues facing the city are unique in these tough economic times. Highland Park needs a leader with a knowledge base and thought process that can handle many issues and many challenges.   As you may know, I am finishing my second term on the Highland Park City Council. Before that, I was a member and chair of the Plan Commission for over 5 years. I am the Chairman of the Intra-City Parking Commission as well as the City’s Legal Liaison.   I have experienced first-hand the variety and complexity of matters that come before the Council. A working knowledge of finance, government regulations, labor …

Yes, Tripp, I couldn't agree with you more that elections are for the VOTERS to decide who the best candidate is running for Mayor by voting for their candidate in this election. In reading both sides of these comment threads, I know you must agree that BOTH sides have lowered the dialogue and we can only hope that voters will not be to disgusted to go vote for the candidate they think is best …   more ›

Mayor Curses at Mayoral Candidate in City Hall

Mike Belsky threw the f-word at Nancy Rotering during an outburst Monday night.

Shortly before Monday's city council meeting, Mayor Mike Belsky walked up to mayoral candidate and councilwoman Nancy Rotering and threw a four-letter word at her. "The f-word was the first word in a two word statement," councilman Steve Mandel said. "There was one profanity and one very negative, derogatory word." According to Rotering, there were 15 other people in the room, including Mandel. The group was lined up for dinner during the break between the Committee of the Whole meeting and the City Council meeting. Rotering said she hadn't seen Belsky in weeks before the encounter. She believes a topic that she brought up during closed session earlier in the evening may have been what "set off the mayor," who wasn't present during…

Hi Ed, Again, sorry for the delayed response. This thread fell off my radar. I read the terms of use and also comments on another thread from the Patch editor who mention that they do encourage people to use their full names. It didn't sound like a requirement, although I suspect the need for truth is and that requirement I can certainly adhere to. At some point in the future when there is more …   more ›

Endorsement Letter: Rotering Will 'Drill Into Tough Issues'

City Councilman Steve Mandel endorses Nancy Rotering for mayor.

Nancy Rodkin Rotering will make a great Mayor for our community. She will generate creative and thoughtful debate amongst the City Council, resulting in good government and transparent representation. Nancy is inclusive by nature and practice.  Her leadership skills are demonstrated by forward thinking outcomes resulting from collaborating with fellow leaders within the City Council, on Commissions and throughout our community. I first met Nancy many years ago as a neighborhood leader promoting preservation of the old Becker Estate (Segal property). Nancy Rotering spearheaded neighborhood efforts to keep that great old estate intact. She was successful in getting our attention to landmark the property and fending off development interests …

Just as an aside - for several years now I've been promoting the concept of intergovernmental cooperation to the City Council, both D112 and D113 School Boards, and the Park District in areas where it makes sense (e.g.:it wouldn't make sense for the City to try and dictate curriculum). With the economy being what it is, some have started to listen - it's my understanding that the City has started…   more ›

Supporters for both Terri Olian and Nancy Rotering wrote in to Patch.

Olian 'a devoted participant' in city operation We are so happy to recommend Terri Olian in her candidacy for mayor of Highland Park. Terri is and has been a devoted participant in the city’s operation. We have witnessed her dedication to the well being of our community through her roles on the school board and the city council. Her leadership in Late Nite Highland Park and her continued efforts on behalf of affordable housing demonstrate her selfless commitment to making Highland Park the best of all possible worlds for the diverse range of people who make up our community. Dear Naderrom HP: Please take this as a reply to your statement that (Terri Olian's) "only purpose on the council is to support her own interests. Nancy's analytic views toward city government trump Terri's any day. Nancy opposed the wasteful spending of the movie theatre". 1. Your candidate made it a platform item to rid the council of health care benefits. FACT: Your candidate stands to gain in…   more ›
