Highland Park remembers the Tom Cruise classic "Risky Business," which was filmed nearly 30 years ago in and around the community.
A host of movies have been filmed in Highland Park, most notably John Hughes' "Home Alone," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "Sixteen Candles," but the Tom Cruise classic "Risky Business" is perhaps the most memorable for the community. The iconic teen film, written and directed by Highland Park High School alumni Paul Brickman, celebrates its 30th anniversary in August. In a nostalgic story published in the Chicago Tribune, Highland Park residents remember what it was like to see their favorite locations like the now-closed Shelton's Ravinia Grill and Highland Park Theatre on the big screen. Highland Park's sole movie theater in Renaissance Place may soon offer drinks to moviegoers.
While the Highland Park Theater remains closed, the Landmark Theater in Renaissance Place is making moves to become even more of a destination. Want Highland Park news in your inbox? The city's sole remaining movie theater recently got approval from the Highland Park City Council for the creation of a new liquor license that would allow alcoholic drinks to be sold in the theater's lobby, according to Highland Park City Councilwoman Sally Higginson. "Adult beverages and movies," Higginson said. "What's not to like?" The move is part of a $1 million renovation Landmark has planned.
