About 100 people attended the funeral service Tuesday for the 5-year-old Highland Park girl who was killed last week when she was hit by a car on Central Avenue.
With his eyes clenched shut, Highland Park City Manager David Knapp knelt behind a pew to pray at the beginning of Jaclyn Santos-Sacramento's funeral mass on Tuesday morning. Just then, a young Hispanic boy crawled along the pew and looked at him, puzzled. The child was one of many at a service where another child was the focus: Jaclyn was 5 years old when she was hit and killed by a car while walking on the Central Avenue sidewalk with her mother and two brothers on Labor Day. An 18-year-old Highland Park resident has been charged with driving under the influence during the crash. "Today Show" correspondent Mike Leonard told the packed crowd at the Highland Park Public Library on Sunday his inspiration to pursue a creative career came from this city. The broadcast journalist, who has filed over a thousand stories and has traveled the globe to report, explained that he had undiagnosed dyslexia when he was a child and sat "in the back of the back of the classroom." That is until he went to a Ravinia concert in 1964 and saw Bob Dylan perform. "I couldn't move for two hours," Leonard said of the performance. "I decided that night I was going to be creative." Leonard, who read the lyrics to "Mr. Tambourine Man," was one of a dozen renowned creative minds that celebrated the library's 125th anniversary by reading …

Mayor Nancy Rotering says she and the City Council are frustrated by the Lake County State's Attorney's delay in filing charges against the Highland Park teen who crashed her car into a mother and her three children on Labor Day, killing a 5-year-old.
Our community continues to grieve over the tragic death of 5‐year old Jaclyn Santos–Sacramento on Labor Day. As you may already know, Jaclyn was struck and killed by an 18‐year-old driver while she was walking with her family near downtown Highland Park. Her mother and younger brothers sustained injuries as well. This case, like other similar cases, is handled by the Lake County State's Attorney's Office. The decision to file charges is made by the Lake County State’s Attorney. The City Council, staff and I are frustrated by the delayed manner in which this case is being handled. Releasing the driver with no restrictions was a decision of the State’s Attorney. This was a mistake and we are demanding an explanation. We continue to urge the …

The Saks Fifth Avenue in Renaissance Place will close at the end of December, Crain's Chicago Business reports. The 49,000 square-foot store opened in 2000 in downtown Highland Park. Though no reason has been reported yet for the store's closing, it follows a trend of Saks closures over the past decade. The Saks location at Skokie's Westfield Old Orchard mall closed in 2005, according to Crain's, which also points out that after the Highland Park store closes, the only remaining full-line Saks store in the Chicago area is its flagship location on Michigan Avenue. Shortly after the news was announced, the asset manager for Renaissance Place issued a press release outlining its plan to deal with the loss of its anchor store. “We have enjoyed…
