Patch readers have plenty of opinions about the potential of the North Shore’s first Walmart.
There is no shortage of opinion from Patch readers about the North Shore’s first potential Walmart store on Skokie Valley Road just south of Dundee Road in Northbrook. There has also been a history of retail failure by mass merchandisers in this area dating to the time Sears was the western anchor of Northbrook Court. The location did not last for the company which was then the country’s largest retailer. Earlier: Walmart Seeks Northbrook Location J.C. Penny followed Sears in the location and did not last long. Marshall Field & Co. came next and it or its successor, Macy’s, has been there ever since. Patch wants to know if its readers think Walmart will be successful in the neighborhood. Patch has published an unscientific poll beneath …

With the closing of Mark Shale at Northbrook Court, men and boys in the area will be shopping in downtown Deerfield, Highland Park, Northbrook and Lake Forest.
A North Shore gentleman in search of a men’s store will no longer be able to shop at the mall for his personal needs by the end of December. He will have to go downtown—downtown Deerfield, downtown Highland Park, downtown Lake Forest or downtown Northbrook that is. Earlier: Mark Shale Closing, Northbrook Branch Liquidated With the closing of Mark Shale at Northbrook Court in December, that North Shore mall will no longer have a men’s store. At one time Mark Shale competed with Brooks Brothers as well as local institutions Brittany, Ltd., and Bigsby & Kruthers at the shopping center. 1D World, the British boy band's first US pop-up store remains open until September 12.
As far as we know, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson have never been to Northbrook or its mall. But a lifesize poster of One Direction, the British boy band (and screaming girl caravan) lets patrons of the United States' first 1D World store pose with the band. The poster is so life-like, you can almost smell the singers' hair product. According to one store employee, posters of Harry (the one with the hair) and ones of Zayn (the other one with the hair) sell out fastest, but the store has been restocking items that fly off the shelves. Or slip off, drifting along the linolium floor on a trail of tween girl tears. The pop-up store at Northbrook Court is open every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Sept. …

Menswear retailer shuts doors after 36 years.
Brooks Brothers closed its Northbrook Court store Monday after 36 years at the location, according to a sign in front of the establishment and a letter sent to customers. The store opened its doors the same day as the mall in 1976. Neither the company nor Northbrook Court returned calls to Patch for comments. Customers like Lake Forest City Councilman George Pandaleon were disappointed to learn of the closing but plan to continue shopping at Brooks Brothers. “It will be slightly less convenient for me,” Pandaleon said. “My office is in Oak Brook and there is a store down the street. I’m downtown pretty often,” he added referring to two city locations.

C.D. Peacock employs guards with a hand gun during holiday shopping.
C.D. Peacock’s Northbrook Court jewelry store chose to beef up its holiday security Friday and Saturday with an armed guard complete with a hand gun and a bullet proof vest. At the same time, uniformed Northbrook Court security guards carried no weapons and were not equipped with handcuffs. Tiffany’s had no noticeable security guard at all Saturday though the store was full of last minute holiday shoppers. The Peacock's guard refused to give his name to Patch or answer when queried Saturday. Store manager Sally Salcena refused to comment directing inquiries to Operations Vice President Sharon Thomson. Thomson failed to return calls to Patch. It was later learned she is out of town this week. No one from Peacock management returned calls…

Catch Robert De Niro's iconic performance in theaters on Tuesday.
Long before Robert De Niro became the comedic actor many know him as today, thanks to his roles in movies like Meet the Parents and Analyze This, he was synonymous with characters like Jimmy Conway from Goodfellas, Ace Rothstein from Casino and Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver, which screens Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Northbrook Court. The 1976 film, directed by frequent De Niro collaborator Martin Scorsese, offers a dark portrait of a Vietnam veteran working the night shift as a cab driver in a sleazy section of New York City. In addition to De Niro's disturbingly memorable performance, the film also includes Albert Brooks, Peter Boyle, Harvey Keitel and a very young Jodie Foster in one of her first roles. The film has been digitally restored in …
