North Shore Congressman marks first 100 days in office Friday.
Developing relationships with colleagues and listening to constituents are the ingredients Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) is using to keep his election night promise of alleviating gridlock in Washington. As Schneider marks his 100th day in office Friday, he has had the opportunity to meet all his fellow Democrats and approximately one third of the Republicans. Mark Kirk and the president shared a moment as Obama entered the House Floor for the State of the Union address.
Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) had a close personal encounter with President Barack Obama as the President walked down the aisle of the House of Representatives on his way to the podium deliver the State of the Union, according to a report on UPI. Kirk, who returned to the Senate in January after spending nearly a year recovering from a stroke, fist bumped the President before the two embraced as seen on the You Tube video. Local members of Congress spread out through Washington Saturday taking books to a children’s hospital and sprucing up a children’s shelter as part of the National Day of Service honoring the memory of the late Dr. Martin Luther King. Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) took books to the National Children’s Medical Center while Rep. Deerfield High School sophomore will participate in five-day Presidential Inaugural Leadership Conference.
Do you want an up close and personal view of President Barack Obama’s inauguration Monday as well as some of the events leading up to it? Deerfield High School sophomore and new Patch blogger Lily Zacharias leaves for the Presidential Inaugural Leadership Conference Saturday and will be sending reports back to the Chicago suburbs on her blog. Patch will publish her blogs under Local Voices each time she submits them. They will be the impressions of a North Shore teenager at a major historic event. The Presidential Inaugural Leadership Conference is put on by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) hopes to leave when her 14-year career in the Illinois General Assembly ends Tuesday. Garrett, who grew up in Deerfield and has lived most of her adult life in Lake Forest, made some of her strongest contributions to issues important to the northern suburbs like transportation on rails and roads. Local members of Congress who sit on opposite sides of the political aisle found areas of agreement in President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address Tuesday, but their initial reaction was very different. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) heard a strong vision for the country from the President, while Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) thought Obama was offering campaign themes in his speech. “It was more of a political speech than a State of the Union,” Dold said.
