Tickets will go on sale Thursday for all shows at Ravinia in Highland Park this summer. From classical to pop to '90s rock, this season is overflowing with the acts you expected to see again at Ravinia and ones you never saw coming. The Hollywood actor who co-founded Steppenwolf Theatre Company and played Lt. Dan in "Forrest Gump" had some of his first roles at Highland Park High School. He returns this summer to perform with his band at Ravinia.
When Gary Sinise and a small group of friends first started Steppenwolf Theatre Company in the basement of a church in Highland Park, they each took whatever day jobs they could find to support themselves. Sinise's wife worked as a bank teller at First Bank of Highland Park. Sinise, the actor and musician known for his roles in movies like Forrest Gump and television shows like "CSI: NY," worked as a groundskeeper at Ravinia Festival. He remembers spending his days raking leaves and cutting grass on the festival's renowned lawn. "That's what's cool about going back there to actually play on the stage," Sinise said of his upcoming performance with his Lt. Dan Band at Ravinia on June 13. Welz Kauffman explains how the 2013 season came together, what he's most looking forward to and why Tony Bennett will perform in Highland Park for as long as he'd like to.
Welz Kauffman gives out his contact information to anyone who asks for it. The Ravinia Festival president and CEO says its the best way to get suggestions on what acts to bring to the North Shore's biggest music festival. "I hear from incredibly astute, passionate and committed folks who know their music, know their taste and know Ravinia," Kauffman said in an interview on Thursday. "I follow up with everyone of them." Kauffman has picked and reached out to all the talent that performs at Ravinia each season since he began working at the festival in 2000. The Police frontman joins the Grammy winning singer-songwriter in an increasingly notable list of big name performers heading to this Highland Park music festival in 2013.
Ravinia Festival is slowly but surely assembling another impressive line-up for its 2013 summer season, and they're finally starting to share who's coming. Singer/songwriter Jewel will be performing on Sunday, June 16. The Grammy winner is best known for her best-selling album Pieces of You and has sold over 27 million albums. Which is to say, grab your tickets fast. Sting will perform his biggest hits with a five-piece band on June 7 and 8 at Ravinia Festival. The former frontman for The Police will play his best in a stripped down performance that has been gettin rave reviews all over the world. Tickets for both shows go on sale April 25. Mayor Nancy Rotering joined State Sen. Susan Garrett, city council candidates and Highland Park business owners at the Chamber of Commerce's 101st annual meeting last Thursday.
The Highland Park Chamber of Commerce held its Holiday Celebration and 101st Annual Meeting last Thursday at Lexus of Highland Park. Guests included Highland Park business owners as well as Mayor Nancy Rotering, Councilman Daniel Kaufman and City Council candidates Carolyn Cerf and Alyssa Knobel. The local production company won an Emmy after earning three nominations from the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences, including two for Ravinia Festival commercials.
Update 11/18/12 10:15 p.m.: Highland Park's Bitter Jester Creative has won an Emmy. At Sunday's awards ceremony, the local production company that was nominated for three awards took one home for the special event coverage category. They were nominated for their work at the 2011 Chicago Restaurant Pastry Competition.
