So, they are too expensive, but too many people go. You go to 50 concerts a year, but you don't like the sound system or the people. You pick a picnic, not the Pavilion, but you are upset you can't see the band. Now, I didn't know they were a not for profit. Are they really? Do they really not pay property taxes? Maybe they should pay the property taxes and see if they can make a profit.   more ›

Legendary CSO Leader Dies

Musicians remember Holocaust survivor and Highland Park resident Victor Aitay, who performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for more than 50 years. He died last week, at age 91.

"We have lost a legend," begins the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's obituary for Victor Aitay, the Highland Park resident and former CSO concertmaster who died last Tuesday. He was 91. Born in Budapest in 1921, Aitay didn't waste any time before jumping into musical training at age 7 when he entered the Franz Liszt Royal Academy, according to the CSO. After receiving an artist's diploma, Aitay became concertmaster of the Hungarian Royal Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra. He also organized the Aitay String Quartet, with which he toured Europe. Though he lost much of his family in the Holocaust, Aitay was one of tens of thousands of Jews who survived because of the efforts of Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, according to a 2001 Chicago Tribune…

Taylor Sings to Ravinia Crowd’s Soul

Audience reacts to music spanning more than a generation.

James Taylor showed a sold out Ravinia audience why he is a troubadour for a generation and more Friday with an evening of mostly song and some conversation. With songs like “That’s Why I’m Here,” “Cowboy Lullaby,” “Fire and Rain” and “Carolina in My Mind,” Taylor explained and demonstrated why his music strikes a chord for audiences around the world. Taylor, 64, idolized the Beatles and in 1968 found himself in London face to face with the music legends. He had just signed a contract with the group’s record label. His career was taking off but some feelings were mixed. “It was an extremely good year for me,” Taylor said. “George (Harrison) and Paul (McCartney) were there (in the room). I was surrounded by my absolute idols but I was …

Check Out the Brahms Bonanza at Ravinia

Also celebrate Tony-nominee Barbara Cook's 85th birthday this weekend in Highland Park.

The information below comes from Ravinia Festival. Brahms Bonanza with Chicago Symphony Orchestra In 1853 Robert Schumann predicted that Brahms would be the next great German symphonist, and he was right. By 1883 the 19th-century conductor Hans von Bülow famously linked the name of Brahms with those of Bach and Beethoven—the “Three B’s”—making him the culmination of two centuries of Teutonic music history. These works are also the culmination of Brahms’s own symphonic compositions, his last two large-scale works for orchestra, which astonished audiences and critics of his time for their highly innovative structure and instrumentation. Friday, July 13 at 8 p.m. in the pavilion. Tickets $10 to $70. Movie Music Concerto with Chicago Symphony …
