Sorry Stevie Janowski, I failed on your story about your spot in Lake Forest,Donati's. I almost went there the other day, but went to Left Bank instead. I had two sloppy joes with cheese and got $50 for cleaning Lanes (the owners) gutters at his house. Maybe this "Donati's" guy needs his gutters cleaned? Then I can go there, eat pizza, and get $50 from him???   more ›

City Council to Look at Rosewood Redesign

With approval from the park board and two commissions, the Highland Park beach redesign goes before the City Council on Monday. If the council signs off on it, construction could begin next summer.

The long road for the Rosewood Beach redesign proposal may finally be at its end. Rosewood Beach Redesign: The Story So Far The plan that the park district board passed in August has recently been approved by both the Design Review and Natural Resource Commission. On Monday it faces its final obstacle before construction can begin: the Highland Park City Council, who will discuss whether or not to approve the project at its meeting. The Park District of Highland Park Board of Commissioners voted in August to approve the Rosewood Beach redesign proposal after over a year of intense planning, beach tours and sometimes heated public debate.  In addition to the controversial interpretive center that has frequently been the sole component of …

Ed, the way I see it is another my way or the highway mentality from the park district. Yes there is a group of supporters for and a group of supporters for not building. Do I believe that they have 1200 signatures possibly do you have 300 people yes. You both want some form of improvement, yet not one bit of compromise was offered by the park district. People are elected to serve the public yet …   more ›

David, I am not aware of any evidence that people are choosing to live in, say, Deerfield or Buffalo Grove, because of our taxes. In fact, if you look at this link, http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/April-2012/Chicago-home-prices-and-trends/, you will see that the median sales price in HP fell by 1% from 2010 to 2011, while the median sales prices in Deerfield and BG fell 13% and 12% …   more ›

Rosewood Beach Redesign: A Plan Approved

Now that the Park Board of Highland Park has voted to go forward with the Rosewood Beach redesign proposal, here's everything you need to know about how the plan came together, what it includes and what happens next.

Ravinia Neighbors Association Declares War Over Rosewood

After the Park Board of Highland Park approved the Rosewood Beach redesign proposal, a community group said they'd continue to fight against it. In this week's column, Ed Brill wonders: Why?

Last week, the Park District of Highland Park Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a plan to redevelop Rosewood Beach. Rosewood Beach Redesign: From Plan to Approval The plan calls for the US Army Corps of engineers to extend the beach and create a more natural lakefront, remove man-made blots on the beach such as asphalt paths and metal groynes, and construct a set of buildings including a concession stand, restrooms, and an interpretive center. The Ravinia Neighbor's Association (RNA) used the Park District's decision as an impetus to declare "war." Huh? It's true that there are still several hurdles remaining before the first ground is broken on the project. The City of Highland Park must approve plans and issue permits, and …

Tension always surrounds changes in life, especially the replacement of tall trees and serene lake views with concrete buildings and asphalt roads.I emphasize with the neighbors’ fears. It reminds me of the battles our West Side neighborhood experienced when a few former city council members were dead-set to install a tax producing 7-11 type store (beer and wine included) at the entrance to our …   more ›

memories, I remember when Park Ave Beach was for swimming and had guard house and showers, before it was turned over for long term storage for those who own boats, what a shame there no longer a swimming beach in the central part of Highland Park. I'm sorry Dan, you are correct in that THIS current proposal has been presented one time. However, the overall theme of wanting restrooms, concession stand, lifeguard station, and Beach House (or interpretative center) in one form or another at Rosewood Beach has been a recurring theme for what now, 15, 20 years? I think it's analogous to a small child asking a parent for a Butterfinger Bar in …   more ›

See 3 pictures of the door and windowless portion of the structure on Ravine Beach which creates a dangerous space in a remote location of Park District property. There is no doubt that this needs to be addressed ASAP in some responsible fashion and it could easily serve as the Intrerpretive Center/Beachhouse at a much lower cost than adding a new structure for this purpose on Rosewood Beach.   more ›

I disagree that making a comparison of the size of the structure to some homes in HP is meaningless. Indeed, it gives the reader a point of reference for such comparison. Some people may not have the time to visit Rosewood Beach, and the photos I've attached to this article may be of help to them. This isn't a shed or small structure by any means. Rather, the Park District wants to build a 1960 …   more ›
