Passover arrives on March 25 this year, when Jews across the world will come together to retell the Exodus story over four cups of wine (or grape juice for those who can't indulge), and of course, a large, festive feast. Passover Traditions As the story goes, during their flight from slavery, the Jews did not have enough time for their dough to rise, resulting in a flaky cracker that is eaten instead of bread for a full week during Passover. The diet changes go beyond bread, however, and depend on family tradition. As a general rule, just look for the “Kosher for Passover” label, which thankfully spreads to more products year after year. The Highland Park Nursing and Rehab Center (HPNRC) is proud to be hosting a traditional pre-Passover model seder in collaboration with the Highland Park Senior Center. The seder, led by Rabbi Nosson Factor, will take place on Thursday, March 21, at 11:30 a.m. at Highland Park Nursing & Rehab Center, at 50 Pleasant Ave. in Highwood. Admission will be $5 for Highland Park Senior Center members, and $8 for non-members. Tickets can be purchased by stopping by the Highland Park Senior Center, or calling (847) 432.4110. All registration fees will be generously donated to the Highland Park Senior Center. Admission will include a complementary Haggadah. During this year’s celebration of the Jewish holiday of Passover, which starts at sunset today, I thought I’d offer viewers at seat at my familiy's Seder table. Seder is a traditional Jewish feast that most families share together on the first night of the eight day celebration. "Passover is a celebration of the Jewish people's freedom from tyranny and their exodus from Egypt escaping the tyranny of the pharaohs in ancient days," David Fiedler explained. To commemorate the Jews exodus from Egypt, we all gather together at the table, and read from the Haggadah. How a boy with autism learned to love this Jewish holiday.
Passover doesn’t seem like the kind of holiday that would excite most kids. There are no presents like on Christmas or Hanukkah. There is no dressing up and collecting candy like with Halloween. There are no parades or fireworks like the Fourth of July. But, for our son, it is a glorious time. We had been invited to Seders since Kai was very young, though it has only been in the past couple of years that he really took an interest. When he was six years old, we got a DVD from the library that explains Passover to children. Chanuka & Passover at Bubbe's featured Muppet-like characters, and tells the story of the freeing of the Jews from slavery in ancient Egypt, and the symbolism in the modern-day Seders.
