The National Weather Service is predicting two to four inches of new snow accumulation Thursday night in Highland Park.
Snow along with freezing drizzle could make for dicey driving conditions Thursday night and Friday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for much of the Chicago suburbs with snow expected to start late Thursday afternoon and continue into the night before switching to freezing drizzle and light snow by early Friday. Between two to four inches of snow is predicted for Highland Park late Thursday. Snow and freezing drizzle is expected before noon on Friday. Temperatures will reach a high of 35 degrees later in the day on Friday. How much snow fell in your neighborhood?
Update, 1:25 p.m. Feb. 7: The National Weather Service released its final list of snowfall totals today. As of 10:30 a.m., the highest total was in Beach Park, which saw 9.6 inches. Many other communities, like Bourbonnais and Bridgeview, saw just a trace of snow. What was initially looking like a non-event as of late last night, with just 1-3 inches of snow expected, has turned into a major snowfall that is already resulting in after-school activities being canceled in many districts. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning until midnight for Lake and McHenry Counties, with 4 to 8 inches of snow expected. Snow is expected to fall at rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour at times this afternoon. Snowfall totals are already being reported by trained spotters and local officials. How much snow can we expect on Thursday?
Update, 10:30 p.m.: A winter weather advisory is in effect for Lake and McHenry Counties from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday. The winter storm watch is no longer in effect, according to the National Weather Service in Chicago. The forecast calls for precipitation, including sleet, snow and freezing rain, to fall Wednesday night into Thursday morning. The precipitation is expected to change to all rain once the temperatures reach above freezing, the National Weather Service says. Curious about how much snow fell over northern Illinois last night? The National Weather Service in Chicago released its list of snowfall totals from Sunday night through Monday morning. A the high end of the reported observations—largely from emergency management personnel, trained spotters and local residents—was Rockford with 4 inches of snow. Will northern Illinois reach 40 degrees by Sunday?
Snow, rain, highs around 40 degrees. Not surprisingly, that's all in this week's forecast. The forecasted snow Monday (with totals of 3 to 7 inches possible by storm's end) will give way to possibly even more snow on Tuesday, with the National Weather Service in Chicago predicting another 1 or 2 inches. After getting through most of the winter season thus far with barely a dusting of snow, northern Illinois is forecast to see its second moderate accumulation within the span of a week. A winter weather advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. today until noon Monday due to an Alberta Clipper system that is expected to bring snow across northeast Illinois. The National Weather Service in Chicago says between 3 and 5 inches of snow could fall "along and north of a line from just north of Rockford to Chicago to Valparaiso." Snowfall rates could reach an inch per hour at times, according to the National Weather Service. Winter Storm Magnus dumped nearly a foot of snow in some parts of Wisconsin and Iowa, while places like Georgia and Tennessee saw tornadoes.
A massive storm system resulted in snow and tornadoes across the country Wednesday, leaving small amounts of snow here in northern Illinois and nearly a foot of snow in portions of Wisconsin. According to the National Weather Service Office in Chicago, the 12-hour snowfall ending at 6 p.m. Wednesday saw .6 inches of snow fall in Grayslake, while Oak Lawn saw just a tenth of an inch. That same storm system, Winter Storm Magnus (as named by The Weather Channel), dumped a lot of snow elsewhere in the country. Reedsburg, WI, for example, received 10 inches of snow, and 9 inches of snow fell in Watson, IA.
